Is there anyone who can give me some guidance. I was driving up the A14 this evening when the revs took off around the clock and white smoke started bellowing out the back of the car, followed by what can only be described as noisy tappets. This stopped after about 20 seconds and we had about half a mile of 'normal' motoring before it did the same again, thankfully approaching the slip road at Alconbury. I got it into the services and stopped it and now it just wont go again. Got it recovered but does anyone out there know what the problem may be or if they've had a similar experience:(

Sounds like the turbo is running away! Do a search for what this can do as it is quite dramatic.

IIRC a quite diagnosis is loss of engine oil. Check that and if you have lost some this may be the issue!

If wrong I am sure someone will correct me! 😊

met some new landy people today and one of them had a 200tdi (disco engined) defender with a dead turbo that had throw oil through the intake system unfortunately don't know what the symptoms were but it's fairly simple to replace as I helped to remove the dead unit

That sounds like fuel getting into sump and then into turbo. Check oil level and smell for diesel in oil. Hopefully it's injector seals and not cracked head.

Just got the first quote back for the Disco from the local garage. Hes told me a plug has come out of the side of the engine causing oil to be lost as well as there being a lot of diesel in the sump and that the bottom end of the engine is badly damaged causing the engine to growl badly now he has it started. Does this sound right. Hes quoted me £1500 for the replacement engine and a further £1500 to fit it. Does any of this sound right as a friend of mine said the list of issues it has doesnt tally?

td5 engines second hand start around £800 on ebay, so a grand plus will get one, but the labour is very steep for fitting it
