Next time you go out for a run, when you stop the engine open the bonnet and see if the viscous fan turns easily, or is stuck on? If it's permanently on it will be over cooling the coolant so affecting the heater, on tickover. As soon as you're driving again there will be more heat which will compensate.

I had my heater going cooler on me once last week, with thick snow and moving a 10mph the heater started to get cooler the heater fan was on 4 so I move it back to 2 and the heater got hot again.
What the fan was doing is when no.4 sucking in more very cold air than the poor matrix could deal with, air was also being sucked through a snowed over air intake . Temps are just -2c so now no such problems.
Also happened with my old RRC so nothing new.

Ok did some checks as suggested, first on the way home from work when engine was at running temp (half way on gauge) i turned the fans down in stationery traffic but it still blew cooler air than when moving.
When at home i checked the fan, it turned both ways with a little resistance, is this right?
Will silver foil over the grill help used to do this on my first car (metro)
I think some thing is wrong some where as these cars have great heaters and should have the ability to drive to the north bloody pole in extreme temps.
Any help much appreciated.

I agree it could be a stat, but they are more expensive than on a TDi and more importantly, more of a sod to do.
Going home last night mine was running at about a third of the way up so I flicked the heater off & it went up to halfway,back on again & it's back down to a third.
My take is the heater is overcooling the engine so it's running cold.
Try turning the heat setting down & see if stays at that temp.

Had the same problem on my td5 last year and new stat solved it...they are a bugger to get to I agree...stupid place to put something so awkward to change

Mine had similar symptoms but with bubbles, coolant topped up and system bled and it's a lot better. Mines a petrol.

I had the same symptoms in the snow at the beginning of this year. After a quick check, I'd been driving around with NO coolant!!
Luckily all seems ok now and I check the level like a hawk. Only thing i've been left with is I have had to take the fuse out for the AC fan as it kicked in automatically to 'save' the engine and I couldn't/cant switch it off.

If you can find someone local to you with a Hawkeye or Nanocom it'll take them about 30 secs to turn off "forced fan assist" in the EMS menu.
