I think I've established its HGF now (see blown head gasket thread by iannotts I hijacked)

Hi Cabbie thanks for the interest. Head off, took to a workshop where it will be pressure tested and machined if necessary. It means I have to wait in anticipation before i can get the correct head gasket. All I could see was a bit of blackness between 3 and the water jacket which I think is a common failing.

OK. Read in the other thread that you'd got the overhauled head back. Have you got it on and has it sorted the heater problem?

Just finished now, had a run to Valley and back and after a few teething problems (split injector return pipe) I now have normal temperature and a heater!

Bet you of all people said Thank God - and meant it, when the job was done!

Just need to replace the injector return pipes along the injectors as one of them split. Other than that it starts and runs well.

Yes very pleased, yes I did thank God. Hopefully I should be Ok for a while as I have changed just about everything under the bonnet related to the cooling system!

well, I guesstimate that all things I have done would have been close to £1000 in a garage with all the labour and extortionate parts prices. Everything I have done has cost me less thatn £300 including the Vat. Also as you mention I have learned a huge amount about the inner mysteries of the 300TDi. For instance I didnt know that the piston comes all the way to the top and practically touches the head and the actual combustion chamber is the strange shaped recess in the piston itself.
