hi everyone i hope someone could help me

i have a 1978 "109" and have a serious issue with the steering, it seems pretty stiff also there is loads of play in the steering wheel and wonder when driving. i have had a quick look and there is some play on the shaft in the steering relay, so the questions i have are

1: how easy is it to replace the steering relay, i have a galvanised chassis so i dont think i should struggle with siezed bolts etc

2: when i fit the new relay do i need to fill with oil if so is there a special grade of oil i need to use, also what quantity?

3: is there and brands you guys recommend for a new relay as i understand that the britpart units are a pile of ****e also where i could purchase from

4: could i rebuild the original relay even if the shaft/bearing is worn?

sorry for all the questions
if anyone could help that would be great :)
thanks

If the shaft isn't corroded you might get away with new bushes and a spring. Not too hard to rebuild but follow the manual carefully - you don't necessarily need the special tool. The spring can do some real damage if it lets go. Fill with EP90, one of the top plate bolts is drilled through as a filler hole.

Replacement pattern shafts are seemingly made of cheese so beware.

Later shafts are multi piece with the seal lands being able to be replaced. Earlier ones are single piece. If yours is single piece like mine was, you can get the ends skimmed on a lathe to accept a new distance piece, turning the shaft into a serviceable item

Ok there is a lot of play in the shaft that's the only reason I was going to replace but do Ny of you guys thing the original is still salvageable ? If so I will rebuild

The shaft sits in tapered bushes if shaft not seriously corroded replacing bushes ,seals and thrust washers will fix it .

When I fitted a new one a few years ago it transformed my steering...I bought a Bearmac unit.

My mate is building up a S3 on a new galv he tried to fit the same type of unit and it wont fitted the hole in the chassis....seems the original maybe narrower...so be warned.

Nick.

I'd have a go at stripping and rebuilding the unit. I redid mine recently, it should be easy enough to rebuild the innards without removing it if you find it is rusted into the chassis.

I followed the instructions here: How to rebuild a steering relay. except my lock clamps didn't look nearly as neat! I could probably have just stripped it down cleaned it and put it back together but I replaced the whale bushes.
