We have an elderly disco 1 that is pretty good in all respects, apart from one little thing that has started this last week or so...

It starts and runs brilliantly, but when you come to switch off... foot on the clutch, handbrake on, turn the key and take it out. then you realise the engine is still running. The only way to cut the engine is to stall it - which, lets face it can't be good, even if you do it in 5th gear!

any ideas anyone?

It sounds like fuel stop solonoid sticking.

is that relatively cheap/easy to fix or is it terminal?

yes it is both cheap and easy to fix. The quick test is to pull the wire off the solonoid with the engine running. If the engine stops then the solonoid is fine if it doesn't then its knackered. To test it properly to see if it is the solonoid you need to apply a test light or multi meter to the terminal and make sure that the live feed is being cut when you turn off the ignition. If the feed IS being cut then it is the solonoid. If it isn't being cut then the ignition switch is the most likely cause. I suspect it is the solonoid though. I think it is part number RTC6702 and costs about £20.

had the same problem but in reverse wouldent start, took solonoid out and cleaned it and off she went bit of dirt causing it to stick i think, yours may be sticking in the up position.hope this helps.

Have you been running on veg oil? I was running 100%SVO and after a few months my solenoid started to stick occasionally. I gave it a cleans and ran on desiel and it has been fine since
