That kind of gunge can be an indication that you have dodgy injector seals, basically blow by gas from the cylinder can make it into the fuel rail - probably worth having the injectors out and replacing the copper seals and o-rings.

Think that is the way I will have to go. No leaks anywhere else and pump seems OK otherwise.

Would injector seals have caused the engine to cut out? Gas in fuel line causing a blockage?
