still don't know how it knows it is on the power stroke, maybe it fires injectors at every TDC but will only injects fuel when the lobe on the cam shaft is in the right position, ie every other TDC per cylinder.
Think it operates the injector on both strokes, just that only one of them will the injector be fired by the compression of the rocker arm... it only fires if there's sufficient pressure of fuel.
I'm curious as to why the timing chain snapped in the first place. It shouldn't have done. Something in the engine drive chain must have locked up to cause this. Have you investigated?

Chain breakage in Td5's is not uncommon, or so I've heard and read, beggared if I know why though, perhaps the chosen chain is underrated for the job, who knows, most other engines with chains will run until the chain is stretched beyond belief and rattling like a marble in a trash can, in my experience.
I aspired at one stage to convert my Tdi engine to chain drive cam etc, I believe it is doable, but from what I've heard, I'll stick with the elastic band and just replace it regularly.
I realise this diversion does not help with the original question, but because of such problems with electronics etc is why I am keeping my Tdi, the technology employed is in keeping with my mechanical abilities.
