83MILES from a quarter tank is 17.3mpg
89liters in a tank
4.88gallon in quarter tank but you can never trust a gauge better brimming the tank driving round then next time you fill brim it and note how many liters it took to fill diving over 56-60 mph will return poor fuel economy it even tells you this in the hand book if you need better fuel economy slow down if you want to go faster buy a car lol

why are people so obsessed with mpg?

if your that worried about mpg sell the landy and buy a corsa or shut the fcuk up whinging about it man up and get on with it

i agree in part but i would also be ****ed if i dropped down to 17MPG for no reason fair enough if i was chugging along at 75mph but under 60 you should be getting 25 at least

he's not whining, he thinks there's an engine problem of some sort or somesuch, so stop whining about him not actually whining! ;)

with a 2"lift and oversize tyres 178 miles for £50 whats that work out at considering its on bio at £1.30 bloody dear for bio thou
I make it 23/mpg

20 mpg sounds perfectly normal. OK the low side of normal, but not any great surprise.

Man up mines on 18

Well thats about 35 ltrs for fifty quid and you did 115 miles so that works out about.................15 mpg  They do say the lift will cause more drag but that still seems excessive. Have you checked the brakes aren,t binding ?

my v8 bobtail rr used to do 8mpg 10 if i was very lucky..so i stopped whinging about it sold it and bought a doozil

it's a 300tdi! :)
dohh

i drive a 200tdi its doing arround 30mpg.... id be concerned if it dropped.... i dont like paying out more for fuel than i have to, but i need the capabilities of the disco , driving a corsa cos it uses less fuel aint an option when i need to tow a tamden axle trailer off tarmac.

id start with the air intake, new filter check the airway is clean and unobstructed all the way from the turbo to the outside air. valve clearances are a possible , if the valves dont open properly the engine will struggle to get airflow in and out the cylinders, then its injection pump and injecters. are you sure the cambelt and timing is ok... one tooth out on cam or pump ?

Loads claim to be getting 30MPG.
Mine is all serviced and I regularly change the fuel filter (back on veg now) and clean out the airbox.
1998 300 tdi auto
177K
De EGR'd
De Cat'd
lifted 2"
stock wheels (AT2 @ 35 PSI)
Full roof rack (took it off for a 1000 miles made 0.7MPG diff).

Now tracked 4300 miles on Fuelly and averaging 22.5 MPG (last fill 20.6mpg and getting worse)
When I first got the disco (100% standard) it was returning just under 24 MPG.

I know its not great, but i enjoy driving it.

And FFS stop working out MPG based upon where the needle is. For a start the top quarter is much larger then the bottom quarter.
Example. I get apx 250 form the top half of my tank and about 100 from the bottom half before.
As already stated the ONLY sure way of knowing your MPG is to brim it, record how many miles you do. Brim it again, record how many litres / gallons used and then divide by miles done since you brimed it before.

if you really want to monitor your MPG use something like fuelly

Disco (Land Rover Discovery) | Fuelly

Mine is showing a steady decline in MPG, but mostly likely down to more laning than road miles recently (I hope  )

300 tdi disco.. 2"lift 245/70 a/t's. full length roof rack, no injun mods at all.. still got egr, cat, pump not touched..

usually get between 80 and 90 miles on a £20..

put £30 in sat mornin (there was a bit in tank, fuel light not on) 120mile round trip to Gainsborough, then 25mile trip in eve..

put £20 sunday mornin.. did 46miles.. come to work today 16miles..

still enough in tank to get home.. and probably another round trip to work..

but i seldom exceed 60mph, usually plod on at 50 to 55mph.... at least 50% to 60% of any journey is on m-way.. everywhere i go is away from or around the outside leeds.. (cos leeds is a sh1tole)

oh and on a weekend its usually loaded up with my dj/disco gear to fully loaded too..

thanx nick as i have said further down the thread i put 40 quid in and ho 80 miles out of it so mines doing half of what yours is.i have just stripped my ip pump and found oil under the plate at the top which leads me to a knackered turbo.so for everyone saying man up its a landrover NO i wont its a landrover yes i agree but a ill one at that.this is why wrote this thread for ideas to what was the cause.....i am now changing my turbo and i will be back to let everyone one know what the right mpg should be

It's gonna run out anyway. So let's all use it like it's going out of fashion, then we can pootle around in plastic cars powered by guano, dandelions or AA batteries.

my 200tdi with 4" lift on 35" simex's with snorkle, winch and loads of other heavy shizzle and 'adjusted' fuel pump does about 60 miles per £20 depending on where i fill (ie price) and where i drive... basically it varies, i don't care, like noisy said... get over it! :) they are big heavy square vehicles, its never gonna be cheap to run! 20mpg is about right, it could be worse... i had a Nissan 300zx that did 8mpg... on a run!!

one thing thats had very little mention is driving style
my 200tdi normally gets arround 30 mpg... its standard on 205 tyres, roof bars are sometimes on, aircon belt is off.
using low gears and brisk acceleration is what drinks fuel, off roading in low box is bound to kill mpg, i aint in a hurry i rarely get the engine over 2000 revs going up through the gears, most of the roads im on the other traffic limits the max speed to arround the fifty mark.
i dont bother working out the figures if ive been towing or off road.
