Hi all hope your all okay hopefully many of you with the knowledge may help me I have brought a landrover discovery 1 1997 offroader (just ran out of mot ) i have brought this on the intention of using it to go to work and offroading at the weekend but drivining on the road is a nightmare rocking side to side at higher speeds woling about really bad im very new to all this and i think the suspension set up is to soft for road use i need your help to advise me if i can chance the shocks or other parts to make this drivable on the road again this is what mods it has Spec split charge Bearmach +3 springs 2" blocks +5 britpart shocks Terrafirma wide angle props Terrafirma steering bars Xsprings dislocation cones Adjustable panhard Castor arms front and back Welded diff 35" simex tyres Plus all the stuff u can see bumpers etc Any help would be aprecated thank you all
 
Will make a nice off road toy, but I think you're a bit optimistic to think you will get it to have good road manners with that setup.
The welded diff will be a pig on anything but the slippy stuff.
I'd sell current mods and tyres and get some stuff a bit more toned down to give you the best of both worlds.
Or just drive it and except it's a monster lol
 
Increase in off road ability leads to a decrease in road manners. Including suspension, body lift and tyres it's what? 7", 8" taller than what it was designed to be?

Add to that the rear tyres scuff, slide and skip their way around corners...

I doubt stiffer suspension is going to solve your problems.

So basically you bought a mini monster truck having never owned a standard one before and expect it to drive like a Porsche?

Ignore the road handling for a moment, how bad is the rot and how deep have you dug into the body shell?

Just replied to his first post in New members...go put it through a mot (it's not got one) and come back with it's fails...
 
+1 ^^^^^ Re the MOT. The welded diff and the height will be awful, also, you didn't mention anti roll bars, has it even got any?
I'd be tempted to buy a "spares or repair" vehicle and just strip the bits off it to put it back to normal, put 'em on and see how it drives, that'll give you a benchmark, then you can work your way back to what you want. Changing the diff is relatively easy although it is a heavy beast. But the whole thing has been put together for a purpose so everything is interlinked. Maybe you could just fit much stiffer anti roll bars and a normal diff for road work then swap them all back for off road stuff, but this is a bit vague and others will probably have better ideas.

Welded diff on the road! +5 lift and those tyres will be awful even if set up correctly. Its just not going to be nice at speed. Read up how a differential works and why they are in your axle. That welded diff alone will be horrible to drive on tarmac and will also stress the transmission and tyres. Unpicking someone elses work will be tricky. Did you test drive it before purchase? Mot it and take a deep breath.
 
Have you go any pics? As has been said the more ‘off road’ you make something the more compromised it’ll be on the road. For most things any standard discovery will do the job just fine, I’ve added guards in the past and slightly larger more aggressive AT/MT tyres but that’s all, I’ve never felt the need for more height. I was looking at taller suspension but was persuaded not to on here and haven’t regretted taking that advice.
 
If its as "adapted" as that is it actually street-legal? What happens if the police pull you over for a spot-check or VSA want a look at it? :(

I have mostly the same setup as yourself except the welded diff. Just takes a bit of getting used to, i.e dont go into roundabouts to quick as you may not exit them on 4 wheels
