Just thinking. The op says he pulled the battery connections off. Wouldn't that kill the fuel pump etc leaving the car running on just the excess oil mist which would eventually not be enough to keep it going?

Possibly not, the alternator will still be generating even if the ignition was off and that could power the pump.

If that was how it ran and stopped then it will have partially seized at the end. By all means try and get/keep it running but sorry to say I suspect it will have been mortally damaged so don't be surprised if other issues start arising.

+1

bloody hell, didn't think you meant it got that bad. just high revs for a bit

Would it? My understanding was alternator feeds the battery and the cars system pulls current from the battery. That way the battery acts as a voltage regulator.

In my experience (non-landrover) If the alternator fails the car runs for a short period but if the battery fails or becomes disconnected then the car stops more or less straight away

dont think there is a pcv on the L series only the bmw m47/td4,if its a manual and it runs away, quickest way of stopping is to stall it

Most/all of the electrical power requirements for the vehicle are supplied by the alternator but you are correct in saying that the battery ac6s as a sort of regulator to stabilise the alternator output. If you think about it there is only one cable attached to each of the battery's terminals, you cant put current into the battery (charging it) and also take current out at the same time with a single cable as each current flows in the opposite direction.

Oh got you, okay that makes sense.

My experience was just as bad as that video I kid you not.

I have been running it about since and I had a few more 'lesser' runaways but I was on a motorway so could control it.

It seems as if I have burned all of the excess oil out of the system now - I havent had a chance until today to even try to find the crank breather - where is it?

I'm moving house and need this engine for a while longer..

sounds like you are one lucky camper ;)

i'd have expected issues if it was that bad. BUY A LOTTO TICKET!
