And if you ever want guaranteed professional help, there is a Freelander specialist not a million miles away from you, near Lakenheath.
I’ve used them myself - very good guys (husband and wife own it), access to all the parts and very knowledgeable.

Welcome. My only question:

If 1969 might just happen to be your birth year, not so far from mine, I can't recall ever saying "my bad".

I have, however, heard my kids say it 😁

Hi. I'm near Royston (always walking the dog up the heath). Often park in the Maconald's on the roundabout & I always have my scanner with me so if you're stuck let me know.

it only blows smoke at start up (white)
that'll be unburnt fuel .. [ if bluish .. that'll be including oil ]
given dash-light .. underpowered ..
i'm going with lack of fuel pressure.
e.g. leaking injector .. fuel rail sensor wiring corrosion due to h2o ingress [ pre upgrade harness ] ..
maybe fuel hp.regulator ..
at worse .. a worn hp.pump .. [ u can tell that if it cranks seemingly forever on a warm-engine start ]
.
good luck ;-]
ps don't fret re replies .. many are good helpful folk here .
jibes are mostly good natured.
