Just for info Keith. X308 neutral switch is only mentioned in RAVE up to 1997. And is not listed on component location table. 1999 on only neutral switch X293 is mentioned. (Manual box). Maybe another RAVE cockup.

Extract from 1997 Rave. But only to do with ratio changes in transfer box. Not part of starting circuit.

Neutral Switch (X308) or Clutch Switch–pin 34

A shift between ranges is possible when the
transmission is in neutral. The Transmission
Gearbox Control Unit (Z256) senses this via a
Park/Neutral Switch (X308) on automatic
transmission vehicles and via either a clutch switch
or a lever neutral switch on manual transmission
vehicles.

I agree that the separate switch is just for the ratio change.
I still want the OP to let us know if the dash display shows the correct gear positions. If it does it looks like it may be a BECM problem along the lines of the post by Martuk.

Hi
I used the car yesterday and it was fine, the gear positions are showing on the dashboard. Something that I did do while having this problem was to charge my battery, in a earlier thread (reply) I did say that I tried my car one morning when I got home from work and it started....any thoughts regarding my battery, my car can be left for maybe three days without been used.
I was also hearing a clicking when I had my problem from under my drivers seat.

Possibly, The starter relay pull circuit is grounded through position III but that circuit goes through the BECM. And will only be completed by the BECM after certain criteria are met. Impact switch, security code match, alarm off Etc. So if it's playing up and works with a charged battery maybe a bad contact or weak circuit is coming into play somewhere. And the extra voltage is making the difference.

Hi
Used car all day Saturday and was fine, started ok Sunday morning and was ok until wanted to use it Sunday afternoon, just nothing, dashboard lights up, I then just turned the ignition key slowly 2 or 3 times and she started.
this going to be a nightmare, especially if your thinking my BECM maybe at fault.
Where do I start to locate this problem with the Becm, haven't seen a wiring diagram in my copy of RAVE.

So check the ignition switch.
