Hi people , was wondering if you could give some advice over a possible issue I’m having that caused me to once again get stuck at the side of the roads, I’m sorry if this doesn’t read well or I miss out on some basic details I’m not good at the English language

When driving my defender tonight I was suddenly just getting loss of m
Power and then completely cutting out , this happened around 3 times first I put down to lack of diesel although the gauge said it had 1/4 of a tank I know that isn’t always correct.

the second two times I noticed it cut out when I had the clutch pedal down and was changing gears also the car had a lack of power and then cut out with oil pressure light and battery coming on .

Luckily I managed to get 5 houses away from my house before doing it again and I couldn’t get the car to start at all so I attempted to push it , the car wouldn’t move like it was in gear after a few aggressive shakes of the gear stick and a few tantrum stamps of the clutch pedal I tried to start the car again and it fired up.

I was wondering is it possible that it’s getting stuck in a gear while driving and when I’m going to change down a gear it’s not releasing the clutch and stalling.

its where I would start.
change the lift pump and see how it goes. a cheap thing to change.

Cheers

I’ve just had a look your right they are really cheap I’ll get one off those on order , I’m still unsure about the locking itself into gear , cause the only time I’m not applying accelerator is when the clutch is down which is why I thought of stalling plus the lack of power

Did you manage to sort the earlier smoking and timing issues.
Agree with neilly re fuel.
Have you changed the diesel filter
Is air filter clean
If you put a clear hose from filter to injector pump that will show if air in fuel supply
If lift pump ok it could be a partially blocked fuel pick up pipe in tank
When it stalls charge and oil light on is normal
Does it run and rev normal when stationary
You can change gear without pressing clutch pedal if you get revs right
Is the wire to solenoid ok and solenoid working ok

Undo the bleed screw on the fuel filter and turn it over, if fuel pumps out then the lift pump is working at that time.

Cheers

i did this on the last service to fill the fuel filter this was about 200 miles ago , so ill have a go again

On another forum but has a good write up of possible similar fault causing cutting out

Did you manage to sort the earlier smoking and timing issues. - yes full timing kit replacement, smoking was down to previous owner playing with the fuel pump

Have you changed the diesel filter - less than 200 miles ago I did a full service
Is air filter clean - looks all good took it off and had a look

Does it run and rev normal when stationary - completely fine the last time it cut out when I went to start it again while in neutral it jolted forward unstill i pumped a few times on the clutch and the gear stick then it started fine once I heard it leave gear?

Is the wire to solenoid ok and solenoid working ok - I'm gonna check this its been running really well the past few days and suddenly gotten rain so good chance this is causing issues

Run a wire from stop solenoid to a bulb in the cab then to earth, if bulb flickers as engine stutters you will then know if it is electrical or not.
Could be as simple as duff ign switch.

Messed with the lift pump this morning has absolutely no resistance not pumping deisel at all

Agree with all the advice you've received thus far :) - just thought I'd add that another common side effect of a duff lift pump is that the fuel filter will only be half full of fuel - so, .... take it orft and have a look.

If you do replaced the LP, then get a decent branded one - like Delphi - not a no name "thing" ....;)

thanks for the extra advice I’ve looked this morning and you are right when I unscrewed the bolt nothing came out pumped the lift pump to death no resistance no diesel coming out , to be honest I’m surprised the car is even running , I noticed lately I have to pump the accelerator when turning over to start

HTH.

The Bosch VE FIP is very tolerant of both air and low fuel flow ..... this tends to mean that it will run and run until the cliff edge is reached - I.E. the FIP just can't cope any longer ! ..... new LP should cure it, but don't over look the other advice about the clear pipe and the electrical tests w.r.t the solenoid, for example :)

I will check everything that everyone has said don’t worry , as the car is my only one that is currently “runnable” I’ll be just getting it back on the road as soon as possible and then I’ll investigate the many hundreds of others issues , including the oil everywhere
