Hi all!
I am new to this site and I am in desperate need of help/advice.
I have a 1999 Discovery 2 TD5 es, I have owned the car for about 3 years and have never really had any trouble with it (apart from a new alternated being replaced)
I have a really annoying rattle/ticking/clicking noise coming from the front of the engine. The noise is quite loud at idle but when I rev up to about 1800 rpm it seems to stop but comes straight back as soon I take my foot ofF the pedal!
At first I thought it was the AC Compressor but that has been changed.
Then a friend said check the belt tensioner, I checked it and changed it! Alas the rattle/ticking/clicking noise is still there, does anyone have any ideas?
I am starting to get this sinking feeling that it is going to be something more serious

Please help, thanks in advance

Could it be any of the other pulleys or bearings at the front? there's a lot of them on a TD5, especially with air conditioning. With the belt off I'd be wobbling them and feeling them for play or roughness. The water pump isn't a friend for life and will probably go wrong eventually. If you're feeling brave you could run the engine for a few moments with the belt off to see if it sounds any different. Only very briefly though, as the water pump won't be going round. If the clicking is still there it might be worth digging a bit deeper, like the timing chain.

+1 crank damper got to be a strong possibility given that noise seems to vary with changes in engine speed. Release the tension on the auxy belt and try and see if the damper has any free play axially.

Thanks all for your quick replies! I shall have a look at all your suggestions today! I will probably back on tonight for more advice lol:)

Like I said before thank you for your quick replies! It is the Crankshaft/torsional vibration damper!
My jaw hit the floor when I was searching online for a new one, £400+ for an original LR part! £320 for a non original part! That doesn't include the new bolt and seal! :(
Then just as I was about to concede and shell out for one I found a site that are selling them for £199 +vat result! So all going well I will be busy fixing the old girl next weekend and getting rid of that God awful rattle! :)
