any advice on my m reg disco got stuck today so i put it in low diff lock no light come on so tried to drive anyway but some wheels were spinning some not.also it had gone in to low ratio but not diff locked.then trieid it again light comes on on dash but wheels still spinning.what could be wrong and is it expensive to fix.thanks

Although a Disco is 4wd, the diffs on each axle are, as standard, open diffs. So if one wheel spins, the other stops turning and the spinning wheel spins twice as fast, all power goes to the spinning wheel and NONE to any of the other wheels.

If you lock the centre diff then it locks the two axles together, so if one wheel spins, again the other wheel on the same axle stops spinnng, but power also goes to the other axle. However, the same situation can happen there. such that one wheel spins, one doesn't, so you end up overall with two wheels spinning, and two not turning at all.

It's 4wd in that all wheels can get drive, but only when they have grip.

thanks for the quick reply paul d i thought when put in diff lock all the 4 wheels turned at the same time weather one had grip or not

No, they all turn only when they all have grip! Sounds counter-intuitive, but when you know the system there are ways and driving techniques to make it work very well.

Dab the brakes repeatedly with left-foot, simulates ABS almost and brakes the spinning wheels down so that some power goes to the non-turning wheels. Move the steering left and right, this gives grip to the edges of the tyre treads and does the same .. use the gears etc etc Learn all this and more by 'playing' ... ;)

Heh, a lot of off-road driving is reading the land .. and adjusting course or driving to suit .. ;)

Have fun ...

Stick your location in your profile and join in on a few green-lane outings, you'll soon learn, or screw up while someone films it so we can take the **** .. ;)

maybe it would be a good idea to have a read of the forum and have some sort of understanding of the place before you make a posting.
