I have just bought my first Land Rover (P38 4.0SE) only to have the head gasket blow on me in the first week of ownership,looks like i got stiched up as i was told the gasket have just been done and all should be fine (peace of mind sort of thing) yeah right!!

Not dettered though i would like to get it back on the road and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of an idiots guide to head removal as i would like to have a go at fixing this myself as the cost at the local garage is just to prohibitive, i can usualy turn my had to most things with some guidance. I am off to pick up a gasket/bolt set today and would appreciate any tips/tricks/advice be it useful, funny or otherwise.

hi vic welcome, there are some bad bastids out there selling ****. i got 3 weeks out of mine, its not as big a job as you may think, just take your time, if you find when you get heads off the gasket is not blown, dont wast any money and time putting it back together. you will need a engine.[hope this is not the case] good luck..

Thanks for the reply, i am hoping it is the gasket as it does seem to be running on 7 cylinders and i can feel air blowing out of the drivers side of the engine, but i guess that could be the manifold gasket ???
 
it could be he did it on the cheep,never got heads skimmed, if you need any help post in the range rover page, you get all the help you need..j
 
Or the liners have slipped and no ammount of head gaskets will fix it , check the liners are still at the top of the bore when you have the heads off!
 
Whats the diesel like? i gather they are painfully slow, i had the 525 touring with the same engine and you really had to wind that up to make it go.
 
Slow , boring and noisy- in the wrong way!

Beast you will have to expand you vocab to more than "burn in" or "fit/buy a diesel" lol :p
