Hello to all, My first post on here, been a long time stalker for many a year collecting info and tips! Need help now regarding a tapping noise 3 independent LR garages cannot find. Will say hi first before asking about the problem as unsure of forum etiquette.

Thank you. Landy is 1987 Ex military 110. Retro fitted with 300tdi, LT230 1:14 transfer box and LT77 gearbox. There is a metallic tapping noise coming from underneath. Does it in all gears but only when trundling along and feathering the throttle. Sound is rhythmic and does not really speed up with truck only gets louder. You can feel the tapping 50mph to 70mph. Only does it whilst driving. Sound is difficult to trace. Sounds like rattling jaw faces together of two 19mm spanners. Replaced transfer box front output bearing, tapping still there. Removed front prop and ran it in diff lock, sound was gone, so bought a new front prop and sound returned. Anyone any idea whether is front diff or transfer box? Changed oil in all gearboxes and diffs and found nothing conclusive in the oil.

Does not do it when under load up or down hill, accelerating or decelerating only when revs match with coasting along. Sounds loud if another truck passes or driving through a tunnel!

Ok. Worth a check. My motor has a chinkling noise from somewhere and I can’t pin it down as to where it is…busts ma head so I know how you feel. Wonder if it’s maybe your engine or gearbox mounts/ loose bolts from them. How is all the bushes looking. Any damaged bits of the chassis, mine had a broken gearbox x member that was making a knocking noise. Could it be something as silly as dodgy bearing or something jammed in the hub. Hard to pin it down mate. Keep trying. Do you think you could film/record the noise and put it up.

Tried recording noise before but gets lost with wind and background noise. I'm going to take a punt at some point and replace diff

It does only make the noise while driving..
It was gone when you drove without the front prop (with diff lock on), have you tried it with the rear prop shaft off?
If it is gone again……. that would suggest that your LT230 diff (lock) has an issue?

Will try with rear prop off

Hi, took rear prop off and noise continues. Defo points towards a diff issue

Okay, a few other things…
The front prop shaft is wide angle custom made (why?) , are the 2 u-joints straight or 45degrees turned from each other?

If you take off your front prop shaft you can try feeling on the flanges (diff and transferbox side) if there is any play.
Oil leaking of the seal is a give away. The M20 nut tight?
Most of the time you can replace the bearing without dismantling every thing.

Lift both front wheels and turn 1 side one a the time and try to listen if you hear something strange (loosen the brake pads a little if necessary). Repeat while the other tyre is not turning.
It can be the diff but also a cv-joint…or……..i don’t know.. a bushing of a hockey stick or shock absorber ….. feel around with a crowbar…..

Just find something that doesn’t run like it should.:vb-surrender:

Hi, already tried everything you have suggested and nothing conclusive. Already replaced both output bearings on transfer box. Props are wide angle as originally had a 2" lift but dropped it back to standard as otherwise I couldn't park at work due to height restriction getting into car park! Waiting on a price from LR garage to change front diff.

Bummer, you expect you can hear of feel something

Just replacing thing is an expensive way…but sometimes the only way..

DIY ?!? Depending on the time, money and the need of using the car..

But is it not something else, without the prop shaft there is no drive/pulling force on the front axle ? maybe it tilts back worth a little when putting power on the driveline.?
Has your tracking rod to much play that is resonates on that pice of u-bar under the diff…
I am just suggesting….

Good luck with you quest.

Solved where noise is coming from, borrowed 2 more axle stands and lifted landy at very ends of axle and ran it through gears. Noise was loud tapping and coming from front diff housing could also feel it pulsing. Will fit a recon diff soon as possible. Many thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Finally replaced front diff to find one end of planetary pin had worn down causing an elongated hole in diff housing
