Hi I have just joined this forum and would be interested in your opinions if thats ok. I have a budget of about 11 grand and I'm hoping that will buy me something pretty rust free? with a puma engine maybe? I am currently looking at an ex utilities defender which I would be comfortable buying but there is a bearing noise coming from the transfer box or gear box. The seller tells me he's pretty sure its the transfer box but is there a way to be sure? When the car is in neutral the noise stops.
Thanks.
Mike

Welcome to LZ! :)

You would do better to post in the Defender section about this. Or just search for the many existing threads.
But as you are here. Personally, I wouldn't buy anything ex-utility. They are driven by people who don't own them.
Also, Pumas usually weren't rust free when they leave the factory, steel quality is dreadful.
And the transmission has problems too.
At that price, give it a miss unless you are very comfortable working on Land Rover transmissions.

Do you really need a tratter or would something else be more comfortable?

Do you mean anything else?

The op has come here and expected to speak to fender fan boys and gets a couple of non landy owning ford drivers and a freelanderer...
Who mentioned Freelander's? Most wannabee tratterers come on ere asking q's. A surprising amount have never driven or been in one. When they do it's a bit of a shock. A disco may be the betterer option. But we dun't know why he's looking to buy. Does he want a tratter for looks or need to tow heavy trailers or is he getting ready for when his new born needs a lift to school? Hopefully he'll pop back and let us know his needs. From that he'll get betterer advice.

I mentioned em but you are a freelanderist unless yer so ashamed to admit it

If he needs a go anywhere vehicle with comfort, power and a heater that works, then a Freelander 2 is the way to go. Or a Freelander 1 as second choice. If he's towing a lot of weight then a bigger lr would be needed as Freelanders are limited to 2 ton on the road so not ideal for trailering cows/horses about. He has 3 different options of bigger lr's: tratter, disco or rr. Desired age of vehicle and budget are limiting factors. Ability to repair and cover running costs and weekly breakdowns should be factored into some models. Freelandering is the way forward. A phrase that makes sense.

For £11k any puma will be a pile o shyte. You will find a lot of knackered td5s at that price also, but some tidy ones amongst them. You need £15k for a tidy tdci. Bonkers....
But D2 owners have now started waving to each other! So prices set to rise in 2036 for them. Invest now.

30 k for most of a HT? With a rusty cross member? Who's paying this? A ht 110 new was circa 22k, a bit more with some options but this only has windows and the stero-the very least you would expect on any van for 30 grand new today.

Barking!

My mate works for WPD. When the last batch of Pumas was delivered to the yard, we went and walked round to have a look at them.
Every one had surface rust on the chassis, and they had come straight from the factory on a transporter! o_O

A P38 is the obvious way to go, plenty round the £3-4k mark that leaves£7-8k for repairs, recovery and counseling. You'll not have to worry about rust or big cats

I have seen some out and about. What was interesting was that an older one was towing something, rather than a new one.
