My name is Stuart and I'm new to this forum, and indeed to Land Rovers. Looking forward to getting to know some of you a bit better, and no doubt, at some point I will have to call on your wealth of superior knowledge :). Oh and did I mention both of my sons are army mechanics, so they better look out too.

Welcome to lz, Stuart! :)

Like he sez, what did you get? That don't look like a landy on yer avatar? :D

Well, that's a good question. I am beginning to wonder what Land Rover I have bought myself too o_O It's a 1989 Defender 90 that was rebuilt in 2010 as a Td5. But I'm not quite sure where the 1989 plate comes from as everything about it (to my untrained eye) seems to be Td5.

I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually  And well spotted turboman you're correct, I didn't have a photo of the Landy at the time, I'll change it in due course :D

Do all the numbers match up? with the paperwork?

There is a number system , where there is a limit to how much can be changed and still keep the original ID.

Or sorry to say there is a risk of it being a ringer!!!

Hope it is all legit, cos it is pretty,

Cheers

A very tidy looking landy. But I would look into the identity of that carefully.

As a minor point of pedantry, if it is actually an 89, it is a Ninety, Defenders weren't made until September 90, I think.

Try as I may, I cant see a single part on that looks like it came of an 89 Ninety.

I also notice that the plate is an old Cornish plate. Some Cornish people like a Cornish registered car, so I wonder if someone has transferred their old plate onto it?
Only fly in that ointment, I don't see why they would sell it as an 89 vehicle if it is in fact much newer.

Well the VIN number on the plate matches the MOT's going back 6 years. It had a new chassis (galvanised) fitted on the rebuild so no number there. I was given a lot of receipts showing what the previous owner had spent on it (so I have his name and address). Maybe it would be worth contacting him to see if he can clear up these mysteries. Quite right Turboman, about an '89 being a ninety, but it most definitely is a defender now (if you see what I mean)

What about engine number?

Also looks like the odometer has been changed , a few times, once probably due to the rebody with a td5 shell.

Hope it all works out.

Cheers

Oh dear and it looks like the previous owner neglected to inform the DVLA about the engine change too. I am beginning to get a bad feeling :(

I had to change my engine number, went from a 19J to a 300tdi, ( although I doubt DVLA understand what the change was)
same as you PO had not updated paperwork. Although it was 3 years ago, sent the form off to the DVLA, came back without any questions. Have heard they can be difficult, But I may have been lucky. I take it it changed from a 19J? to a Td5?

Do you have receipts for the engine? for fitting by a reputable garage?

But the good news is about the VIN number matches the Paperwork.

Cheers

Isnt necessarily a big problem provided nothing is stolen. You should be able to sort out the paperwork side, might be a good idea if the old number was on the new chassis as well.

I changed my engine number as well. From one 19j to another 19j. Vehicle had had a Turner recon fitted just before I bought it. Previous owner hadn't told DVLA.

Like you say, no problem, I just sent off the form and waited a bit. It came back with the new number.

Thanks guys I'll keep you posted as I iron out these wrinkles. I have contacted the dealer, and he is sending written confirmation about where the engine came from. It's all a little unorthodox, but all above board ( so I have been told)

Nice,

Glad to hear it is looking like a legit Landie, Did you ask him why when it was rebuilt it did not just keep the TD5 ID?

Cheers

Good! If they have given you legit address and contact details it must be above board, common sense would suggest.

Best of luck with DVLA, they should sort it all out and get the docs up to date for you in due course.

Thanks Mark, nightmares, what nightmares. Where did I see that noisy fuel pump thread (yes really).
Neilly, I shall wait too see what they send me in the way of paperwork before I stir the hornets nest any more :(

Bit envious of the galv' chassis. Just like any car when it age's its needs attention. I hope you enjoy the car to the max, before you start modifying it then you get real kick if you start off-roading. If you already haven't. Good luck

Well thanks for heads up about checking into the ID. After a bit of digging, the hole only gets bigger. I shall not go into details at this point as I am going to see my solicitor on Wednesday. But eventually I am sure this story will make a good entry in the "how not to buy a used defender" section, and maybe the "where not to buy" section too
At the moment, I am feeling very naive and stupid :(

Oh Bugger,

Sorry to read the above Stuart. I hope you get it all sorted .

Good idea to keep it to Yourself, not sure what the legalities are but it can only be the sensible thing at this time.

Cheers
