Hello there!

I'm new in the forum, I had own pretty much all the land rover models except for the freelander, and after been away of Landys for a few years, I'm planning to get a freelander 1. I been doing my research about wich model is the more reliable and seems to be the td4 but still want to know more about the V6 before making the purchase.

V6 is nice too own. Had one for many years. Smooth and the most powerful FL1. Only available as an auto. Not too good on mpg.
 
Hello Hippo I've been reading a few articles you wrote abuto the FL1, you seems to have a lot of knowladge abut this vehicle. Between the td4 and the v6, in terms of reliability and availability of spare parts wich would you pick?

Welcome to Loonyzoo Asylum Seekers Tramways to Britain Guide. Only advise I would give is make sure what came off factory line perfect stays on the vehicle you search for in regards of Freelanders. There's a nasty habit when people sell 2WD version saying for economical reason. Toro or Mierda Simply walk away take the next bus. Freelander 1 are good work horses and family cars but can fall down on expensive time for it age now unless you know lots of suppliers. But don't let that put you off for a good reasonable price Hippo.

The Td4 is more reliable, over time. They can fail but not as often as the v6. The v6 is nice to own but mpg isn't good. The Td4 does feel slightly under powered but it's an engine of the time is was made. So less powerful than what we have to date. I had a v6 for nearly 12 years. Yearly mileage was low. If yearly mileage is high then the v6 becomes expensive to run. They get coolant problems easily. Not bleeding all the air out after changing the coolant, or cracked plastic pipe in the middle of the v of the engine. Small faults like that can cause loss of pressure of the cooling system which ends up causing bigger trouble if not resolved quickly. The coolant will boil if it loses pressure.

If asked which to buy I would go for the Td4 instead of the v6, on running cost and reliability. If you can do the work yourself then the v6 becomes cheaper to own. v6 is cheaper to buy initially.

Thank you very much for the advice. I do have the knowladge to do the work myself but I dont want to be wrenching the landy every two month because it have a problem. How was the MPG you got in your v6? and have you done some research abut remaping the td4 ECU to get a bit of more power out of it?

My v6 did 16.5 to 18mpg locally, on a regular 3.5 mile trip. Enough to get it warm each time. Mainly 30 or 40 mph roads with multiple stops at lights and islands. On the motorway the best I got was 28mpg at a steady 60mph on cruise control.

You can get more power out of the FL1 Td4 using a rover ron synergy box from tuning diesels. Effectively fooling the car into putting more fuel in. Creates a bigger bang, giving more power. It's a diy plug in unit so no messing about with computers tuning by changing the computers map.

17 mpg on average is no too good as you said, definitely something to consider before the purchase. Have you used or tryed those synergy boxes? do they worth the money in terms of power gain?

Never used one myself. To be frank I'm not keen on tuning. Personal decision. A number of others on ere in the Freelander section have used them with success. If you were to move to the FL2 then the diesels have more power as standard. A completely different vehicle to the FL1. But cost a bit more to buy. Although the FL1 is a good car... The FL2 is betterer in every way.

Ok that's good enough for me to know before making a buying decision, I will take a look to de FL2, yet those are more expensive to buy, and I guees, more expensive to maintain as well,.
