hello ive got a little problem with my 1980 series 3 .when ever i pull off in either 1st or reverse i get a loud whine from the gearbox area ..the guy that sold me my landy told me he had a clutch fitted and the thrust bearing is a cheap after market one and this is the noise once moveing the noise isnt there and when the engine / box have fully warmed up the noise totally goes away ...im my mind it is the input shaft bearing that is nosiey ..has any one had any problems with there after market clutch bearings ..or gearbox bearings any info of help will be great cheers benny

I had one that did that too - a chap 'in the know' told me it was the bush in the middle of the crankshaft/flywheel where the input shaft of the gearbox goes into (there's probably a technical name for it!) which needed lubrication.

Needless to say it was still making that noise when I sold it a year or two later ...

normally a sintered bronze bush which is oil impregnated. It is easily replaced as and when gearbox/engine is removed - otherwise dont bother.

If its the clutch release bearing - same thing - they go on for years - dont worry, just replace it if you ever have to take the gearbox/engine out.

if it were the thrust bearing you would have the noise on changing gear on all gears, not just 1st or reverse, second opinion its a gear box problem it could go on for years worn bearings in the box causing back lash and shafts not running true, another thing also dont take some one elses word for it check the oil in the box ive been caught out by some tosser putting engine oil in the box instead of gear oil its worth checking.

cheers for the comment ...it is now leaking oil faster out the back of the engine than i can put it in the top so i think the rear crank main oil seal has failed and im going to have to remove the engine and inspect it all...

hey all, i've developed a whine with my landy, 1971 2a, 2 1/4 diesel, it startsat about 20mph and is there up to my top speed of 40-45mph, it stops when the clutch is in, any idea what i'm up against? thanks

worn bearings and or gears

yes youll have to remove it and strip it ,they will run noisy for a while but you are only increasing the number of parts required when eventually done
