I am currently looking to buy a Freelander and thought i would join this forum to get an idea of what to look for in a potential purchase

At present I own an MG ZR, which I bought last August, but i've realised that, at 29 years old, I am a bit old for a hot hatch and want something a bit more reliable, sturdy, roomy....and grown up! I also have a 4 year old daughter and am conscious of her (primarily) and my safety in the event of an accident.

My search through eBay and Autotrader have led to me seriously consider buying a Freelander, all be it an early model as cash is in rather short supply. Basically whatever I get for my ZR, plus about a grand will be used to purchase a Freelander.

So, if anyone here has any advice as to what to get/ avoid, where to go/ not to got to get one or general tips for purchasing one, please, let me know!

Is there anything I shouldbe wary of? I think i recall seeing on a website somewhere that the engine can suffer HGF more than others?? I dont know if this is true, but I have just had a HGF on my ZR and it is not an experience I am keen to go through again!

Anyway, i'll stop going on and carry on going through the forum trying to unearth some valuable nuggets of information!

Yeah - whatever you do don't look for advice in the Defender or Discovery sections, or you might get put off the idea of a Freelander ;-)

Hi chap and welcome to the farm...long and the short of it is get a diesel, td4 if ya can afford it drive it before ya buy it and reverse it on hard lock if it dont wanna go backwards on hard lock ya got vcu issues, drive it and listen fer cluncks in the back and the front when putting power on and off, check fer lights on the dash, check hill decent button, if its a auto drive it up a steep hill and watch the taco doesnt try to redline, they are a complicated beast but get a good en and youl be a happy chappy...

A good Freelander is an excellent vehicle. The BMW-made TD4 is the pick of the bunch but the pre-2000 L-series Rover diesel has a repuation for robusticity and reliability. It will seem less exciting after your MG days.
