Hi everyone.

Just thought I'd say hello. I'm looking for a 4x4. It needs to be able to get around a few farms but also be at least half reasonable on the road too. Occasionally I need to tow a car trailer with it too. It's also got to look good too!

All pretty easy to fulfill, but here's the kicker...it has to be reliable. I'm handy enough with a spanner but I do get the right hump having to spend every spare hour fixing something that hasn't been designed properly in the first place.

The defenders can look pretty good. They are great off road (I had a 110 as a safari truck in South Africa), can tow a house (well, a medium size boat so should be OK for what I need) but not without problems. Ours had major head gasket/warped head issues that the dealer couldn't seem to put right no matter how many times they tried. Also, an hour or two on the motorway would have the floors red hot! "Yes, the transmission does that" was the answer.
Hmmm...'they all do that sir' doesn't seem right?
Also, I read a lot about rust, etc.

So I guess I'm really here to find out if a Defender (and which defender) would work for me or if I need a Japanese pick up instead?

Any info would be great!

If your even considering a jap pickup ask else where, what budget you got ?Defenders will fill all your needs, will need to get out the spanner though

Yeah, a Jap pick up has the reliability, etc but is lacking a bit of soul. But I do need something I can drive round without it constantly breaking. So how much 'character' does the Defender have? Will it literally rust away beneath me as i drive down the road? Will the floor pan glow red after 90 seconds at 70mph?

Bucket loads of character, a well looked after one should not be to bad rust wise, the floor will not get hot there are to many vents for that (usually around the doors)

Better go for a Disco 2 then! :violent: :tea:
