Good evening,

I've been around older cars for the last 30years and recently I've been looking at Land Rovers.

In an ideal world I would love a Wolf Ambulance conversion but the prices are out of reach, I have had a look at a 109 today, but as I plan to convert it into a basic camper and cover some miles, would I be better looking at a more modern 200 or 300 TDi engined version?

Welcome to the zoo. On the note of camper wouldn't a 127 ambulance be more fitting instead of building one.

Hi, yes I'm keeping an eye out for an Ambulance but the ones I've seen recently have all been a little out of budget. I have seen a petrol 110, are newer petrol engines ok?
 
Hi and welcome!

A 110 would be the best bet. Long enough to convert to a camper but not as unwieldy as a 127/130. A Tdi would be the best engine but if you’re looking at one with a petrol engine, it could be a two and a quarter if it’s a very early 110, a 2.5 petrol or a V8. All are good engines. Alternatively, you could get a 2.5 four cylinder N/A diesel, slow but reliable.

Before you commit to a 109, drive one. They’re good vehicles but they have drum brakes, no power steering and leaf springs and aren’t to everyone’s taste!

So, still looking and apart from a nice 110 Station Wagon that I've made enquiries about (sitting idle and seldom used but looks tidy), I have recently come across a number of Utility models. The kind with a van back and roller shutters. The adds mention the chassis' and suspension are upgraded, what exactly does that mean? Thanks

Welcome...means it's been upgraded strengthwise to cope with extra weight in back to carry equipment...
 
OK, so that's a good thing. How do they differ from a standard chassis? More crossmembers or thicker steel? Is there a weight penalty?

Heavy duty springs and possible chassis mod depending on back structure...a weight penalty is not a problem on a vehicle shaped like a brick!!...but ride on heavy duty springs and shocks can be harsh if no weight in back but can be easily sorted...youll get more advice if you post in relevant forum sections try general this one is for introduction of you and vehicle...
