Silly Tilly

Hello Everyone,

I am thrilled to have finally (aged 49) to have bought my first Landy. I really wanted one that would need to be tinkered with but think I may have more work than I bargained for, not to worry I always thought TV and sleep were overrated!

I have bought a 1987 90 with a 2 ltr td engine (now know that it is a 2.5 TD engine thanks to Chunky Monkey), I think (from reading the forums) that it is a 'hybred' as it seems to be part series 3, part defender but what do I know, I am really new to all this.

Anyway I am determined to do as much of the work myself as I can and have already started. I have cleaned the 20 odd years of gunk out of the cab, fitted new seat covers and fitted a stereo and some power sockets.

I was delighted when the sockets and stereo worked as I am on a steep learning curve, but little did I know that I had opened a can of worms.

When I tried to start Tilly she went straight to crank, not allowing me to prime her first. If i did not de- activate the imobiliser, i could warm the glow plugs and start her, however the starter motor continued to crank even though the engine was running. I fitted a new ignition switch.

Now when I start Tilly the starter motor just runs on after firing. The AA man spent 2 hours scratching his head and has given up, leaving me with a temporary fix that has picked up another live feed and attached it to a contact about half way down the left hand (driver's) side of the engine, via a fuse. Only problem is that I now have to remove the fuse to stop the engine.

Any advice about this would be brilliant, thanks guys.

Guys, I am still struggling.

I realised that the spares place had sold me the wrong ignition switch so have swapped it for the right one. Black end with two large terminals and three small ones. I have swapped them over and returned the old one.

Removed all the wiring that I had put in and it has made no difference at all - I am totally stumped and out of my depth!!!!

I think that I have to admit that I need help, does anyone know of a Mobile Auto Sparks that knows about Landys and will come out to Shepton Mallet.

Thanks Buckshot, I will contact them direct. I had intended to join a local club but I think my Landy is shy as there have been two meetings since I bought her and she has been 'ill' both times.

Hello and welcome.
Can't help with your problem I'm afraid as I have no idea about how to mend the yet.
Have fun in it when it running. There is a couple of good lanes your way. You it won't take long to get it muddy

Thanks for the welcome, I will have to pick your brains about the lanes, however I think that my first tentative steps into green laning ought to be with someone who knows what they are doing!!!
