Hello I'm John from South Wales. Have been a Series III and defender 90 owner for a long time, both substantially professionally refurbished. Unfortunately the defender is going to have to go due to arthritis in knee and hip and the need for a bit more comfort in my old age.
Will be looking for advice on agreed value insurance/approximate value for the series and maybe the right sort of value for the defender although it may well go to a neighbour who seems interested if he can put enough pressure on his Mrs. A new 3 piece suite has been offered as a bribe I believe.

Have you thought about fitting an autobox in the Def, make it a bit kinder on your body.

I've thought about it long and hard, ;) Coming up to OAP status, knee hip and back not good for climbing up and down and need something warmer in the Winter. For me it's either a choice of spending quite a bit on a second cosmetic re-furb (replace some doors, panels and respray) or going for something newer. Can't risk it in case the joints get worse and I can only spend the money once. I've already ordered a Dacia Duster (sorry about that :) ). Will keep the Series III though, only light use and not so high.
I spent a lot on the Defender re-furb about 8 years ago including Richards Galv chassis, suspension, wheels tyres, heated seats, re-spray and fancy bits. Will be sorry to see it go, but can't justify keeping 3 vehicles. Thanks for the welcome. John

Pretty clean and able looking motor, although the snorkel wouldnt be for me. I never drive through deep water, and far too mean to pay for extra fuel on wind resistance! :D Although the difference at standard landrover speeds will be fairly minimal. :oops:

Totally get your points about ageing. A few years ago I had an unpleasant vertigo attack, and I do as little landrover mileage as possible nowadays, the bounciness can set the vertigo off again, it has a habit of returning under certain conditions. Sadly, crawling under landrovers and working on them doesnt set it off so badly, so I still come in for a bit of that.

Yes the Snorkel was on it when I bought it quite a few years ago now. I don't off-road other than driving across a field now and then but in these parts we can have some pretty bad snow in the Winter and if anything can get you home a Defender will :) . As I'm retired I don't have to worry about that so much now. :) If I was younger and thinking about another re-furb I think I would be thinking about putting it back to "original" 1994 spec and colour scheme. The body work is a bit tatty in places but it would be a good working vehicle or basis for a cosmetic refurbishment or general tidy-up. Thanks for the thoughts. john

Completed listings on eBay/ autotrader/gumtree are a pretty good guide to what people are paying.

The galv chassis will increase interest but there's little point in adding up what you've spent and adding it on because it doesn't work like that I'm afraid.
 
OK thanks. Will have a look through the classifieds, just seems to be a big variation in what people are asking. I won't have a problem selling it some people seem to like yellow.;) John

There is a big variation, because many people are unrealistic in their expectations. Local paper can be a very good way to sell, if you price it right. You avoid the hassle and timewasters associated with ebay, etc. And you get takers that are close enough to view the vehicle. But you need to value it accurately first.

As BB says, the forum is not an advertising resource, and it upsets management and members if people treat it as such.

Of course, there is no reason you couldnt PM a senior member, and ask them if they would give you a rough idea of value as a favour.

Yes sorry about that. It really wasn't my intention to try and sell it here. I do have interest from a few people already and a local garage which has done all my maintenance work have said they could sell it for me in a couple of days if I want them to. I'm just completely out of touch with how values are going, particularly now they have stopped making Defenders, seems I really under-estimated the value of my Series III.

Hello John, and welcome to the Loonyzone. What a great man you are, close to retirement (another youngster), yellow and black defender :p. Good to have you around o_O, just don't say too much about the Duster, I have a focus for daily school run, but would never in a million years mention it here:cool:

Hi John, Welcome to the forum, I am also relatively new to this but there is one thing you should understand ( and forgive me if you have picked this up already ) these guys can be pretty brutal with there response and say it's only 'banter' however everyone will always try to help. Regarding the value, well you should have a feel for it's true worth but looking through ebay is always the best guide,try searching the auction only listings as that will always produce the true value - that being what someone will actually pay. Good luck with the sale

Thank you. I'm a Land Rover man Alan always will be, still will have the Series 3. Believe me I have a heavy heart at the Defender going.
