first off i just wanted to say hello!

just bought a freelander 1 54 plate 1.8 petrol up in sunny glasgow last week and i was loving it. I came across this forum just after i bought it when searching for some hints tips and advice!

was going to make a profile and say hello but i didn't think it would be under these circumstances!

got the hippo serviced today, all seemed well 92k on the clock and i went to pick the misses up from work, stopped at a junction and when i accelerated to take off again it made the loudest clunking noise ive ever heard.

the car runs but makes a ungodly loud grinding, screeching, clunking noise, its unbearable in 1st and 2nd but the tail end of 3rd it quietens down and 4th and 5th at a slow speed is almost away.

the noise seems to be coming from below the gear box, i had a look under the car (in the dark with a torch) couldn't notice anything obvious other than it appears to of been converted to a 2wd at some point in it's life.

ive been searching google for the last hour but thought id ask if anyone has any ideas on where to start looking when i get it up in the air tomorrow?

thankyou.

First of all, you should Introduce Yourself - Land Rover Zone even though you have an immediate problem.

Previously your car has sufferred a f****d front diff (IRD). The props were removed to alleviate stress on the IRD which has worked for a while - but now it has given up completely.

It may be the internals of the IRD that are now completely shot, or the splines that mate to the gearbox/left hand drive shaft.

Its possible its something else such as a CV or the box itself - but the IRD is the most likely candidate by far. If so you'll need a recon IRD (Bell Engineering appear to be the preferred supplier). You could go for a 2WD one, they're cheaper, or 4WD one and get some props and a recon VCU to put it back to 4WD.

Worth checking the CVs first before spending money - also working out if the gearbox is OK. Not sure how that can be done though.
