Dear Landyzone, I have always been a fan of the Landrover, but living in London I have never had the need to take it further. Now we are looking at moving to Portugal and finally there will be a need for a 4x4 with reasonable clearance for the rough tracks out there.
My question is
-Where do I start, what should I buy?
I don't want to spend to much (is £2-3k possible), I like the idea of the series 2 (maybe 3), where you can take the cab (and back) off, ideally a crew. They are aluminium I believe so wont rust in places. Would like to be able to turn off 4x4 and ideally not something that is heavy on computers, but old fashioned mechanics.
I feel this may be a big topic, but any pointers would be appreciated.
Thank you

Welcome to the loonyzone! :)

Cheap series may need a lot of work, and be pretty tough on the spine on Portuguese roads!

I think if I was moving to Portugal I would see if I could track down a good second hand UMM Alter.
Or if you are dead set on a landy, look for a Santana out there, it will probably have less rust than a British series.

Agree with the above......................... BUT you might be more comfortable buying here in which case 3 grand will just get you an early 110/Defender, or a good ex military Series 3 [way more basic - both easily "convertible in two door form]
Whereabouts in Portugal are you going? I always dreamt of doing that...................
