Well... I didn't think this would come so soon 😅

For those that don't care about the essay I am about to post don't click the links below as these posts show the series of events (TLDR at the bottom);

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/ird-fail.392652/page-2#post-5709981 < It turns out the gearbox had stripped so I was driving in RWD which overheated my prop and destroyed it awaiting re-con, but after a few weeks I had a brand new - second hand gearbox installed and the car was driving for about 10 minutes before the head gasket spontaneously gave out... Great Timing...

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/head-gasket-cylinder-gone.394103/ < This is the thread explaining what has been happening with the recent head gasket replacement which replacing the actual head gasket went okay, however upon starting it back up after meticulously fiddling with the timing ensuring everything is perfect hand cranking the engine enough times to remove a bolt 100 miles long but then the rest happened...

After speaking with dmgrs we decided on a gasket and after checking for warp on the head where there was none to minimal, where I couldn't check fully due to lack of the right tools, we put the engine back together and ensured it was perfect! It would crank and no start so we checked everything;
Timing,
Crank Position Sensor,
Rotor Arm and Dizzy,
Fuel injectors,
Spark Plugs,
Ignition Coils,
Air Locks,
Timing again,
Etc,

Until finally it fired up!

And well it didn't sounds good at all, something was broken, this was non-functional my theory was that the head gasket replacement didn't go quite right and allowed coolant to get in the cylinder and well from there the rest is history piston + water + Spark = engine replacement.

So with that in mind, I got my missus to record the engine starting to document this ruined engine here you are, you can hear that something is not right:

So at this point we moved the stupid Landy and started the cylinder head removal to check for the damage that has happened lucky for you all, we decided to record the hole process in a timelapse 😂

You can see at the end we were trying to retrieve part of piston number 2 where the piston ring was entangled in the bearing and con rod, but we did get that out. Here are some pictures of the cylinder head and pistons so you can see what has happened right after this TLDR;

TLDR

In short after many issues and fixes the engine has met it's maker, that being piston 2 into inlet valves 5 and 6 I assume many times. This has resulted in the need for a new engine, so I guess if anyone is selling near Southampton / Portsmouth ???

The Gasket is so oily as the oil in the top of the head was tipped onto it.

Even got a funny conversation from me and my buddy discussing the hole in the block 😂 (Yes for reference I am about 20 years old and they are 21/22 We are young-ens)

Well to look back let this be a lesson to be patient, this merely happened due to impatience and lack of experience but I am glad it happened, it means now I get to learn how to swap the engine for a working one... Safe to say with that I will be taking my time and ensuring everything is done properly but I am sure I have a long way to go. This car is not dead but just taking a nap for a while, Both I and the Car will be back!!!

Shame it went pear shaped on you.

Its definitely a 'project'. From a practical point of view, with that much wrong with it, it should probably be crushed and start again with 1 that has less wrong with it... but it depends on what sort of project you want :D

The Pear shaping is entirely my fault, will take this a learning opportunity.

But this is for sure a Project, we just had her name plastered on the back of the door! So even the missus still wants it!!!

It will be a minute and even though the car is not financially a good Idea I would like to pursue it, but as many things, it does depend on the money :(

Hey neighbour 👋 not selling yet but just wanted to suggest taking a look at Silverlake salvage yard, you can poke around and strip off parts you want from cars in the yard.

Last time I was there they had a couple of freebies with the blocks still in, might be worth a look?

Hey all.

This is becoming a big post and it is only starting 😂

Tonight I got the engine out, the engine crane has not arrived but we do it anyway until we putting the other engine in but came out nice and smooth with no major hiccups may need to re-wire the alternator plug (Not the thick power cable) as that would not budge and the engine was heavy so we cut it but that will be an easy fix once the engine supplied by @andyfreelandy which me and the missus are hugely grateful for, this couldn't be done without you!

You are welcome. Take your time, ask for advice and check everything. Part of learning process and we have all done it. Once you learn by doing you never forget.

You have been busy!
Pretty sure having done what I have on this car, I think mechanically wise I have touched every bolt other than silly ones like at the back of the dash, done full brakes > Rear diff and diff mounts > engine mounts > Gearbox > Propshaft like 6 times > Drive shafts > front sub frame > lift kit > roof bars + box > upgraded to power fold mirrors and looking to do the headliner soon... May as well have ordered the parts induvidually and built the car like Lego

Edit: Also did the clock spring can't forget the horn and the back door didn't open > right window did not go down...

But you wouldn't believe me if I said I picked this car up and it passed MOT and was perfectly until I started fixing things, fix one thing find another issue 😂
 
Really working up a sweat today in this very hot room, decided that the cylinder head and tools would come with me to the computer today to remove the old exhaust camshaft from my broken engine as the brand new second hand one is a post 2001 model so needs to be converted from the wasted spark coil packs system to the dizzy one.

Swap should be as simple as exhaust cam swap and lack of plugging in the cam sensor.

The cam tool you recommended Andy worked a treat to get the cam gears off!

However I did have some questions, really only about the cam health, they look and I want to stress this... okay... not Terrible but by no means... good.

But I did have 2 main concerns the lobes over cylinder 2 the one that exploded do have some marks but I can't feel them:

more concerningly the actual carrier seems to have a distinct "groove" but the cams where it sits look great!

Do you think this is current or previous damage? the fragments are dirt from my grubby fingers 😂


When it comes to reassembly of the other engine to go back in is there anything special I should be doing for the mating surface of the carrier to the head? other than obvisouly torque in the correct sequence and angles / rating should I get some 1500 grit on the surface to smooth it out and clean it? or should I just wipe it down with microfibre and stick it back together with the dizzy cam on?

Also got a bag of hydraulic lifters that look really good if anyone wants them :p

Cannot forget! Got the engine Crane delivered today so that will be fun to setup and use looking like I am going to have a busy weekend getting the car back together all before I head off to a friends wedding!

Never seen a dizzy cam. Can the bit that turns the dizzy be swapped to the new cam??

Hey

I think it can but the part the rotor arm sits on I believe is press fit in so it would be a right pain to get out of the current cam especially now its out of the carrier
 
I have ordered some more parts for the engine they aren't in the picture but new spark plugs have already arrived, is there anything else I can should renew while I am there? I would do the clutch but with everything I don't have another £100 for the kit from DMGRS

Save £60 and reuse old crank pulley then buy the clutch !?
Problem is I don't have an impact strong enough to get it off out of the engine and those cost £200 upwards or about £60 to rent one which I don't even get to keep it.

Just with the tools I have at the moment it makes the most sense

You'll be glad to know I got a clutch anyway 😂 managed to get a kit on clearance for £75 which is bearable so that should work.

Thanks! Will use the crank pulley I got as a spare I am under the impression they rust out quite often? or at least that is what DMGRS tell me?

Edit: I believe the break in for clutches is about 500 miles? is that right?
