Hello guys,
I decided to repair the engine if I can so I have removed it entirely, (its easier that way)
I have taken the sump off and the big end bearings are well and truly destroyed. I am actually surprised it wasn't knocking before.
As i was turning the crankshaft, the cylinder liners moved with the piston.
How bad is this and why has this happened?

coz they are movable liners and need to be clamped. the rulebook says NEVER move the pistons without clamping the engine.

yu have just fecked yo engine .

The liners still protrude, and surely if they need clamping the liners will move anyhow. From what I know about engines and engineering it is still ok.
Simply on the basis that nothing got damaged while the liners were coming out and if they can be taken out and refitted then all is ok.

moving fitted liners just break the seal and **** will fall on to seat and unless removed and both cleaned etc wont seal properly, but since engines out and your working on it no big deal ,once they are reseated clamp then so they remain so

This is exactly my point. They will be refitted and fixed in place.
I am cleaning the entire engine before rebuilding anyways.
I think MHM maybe having a lady moment.

Just out of interest - how do you clamp or fix the liners in place ??

They make cylinder liner clamps. If you have a Haynes manual it shows you in there.
