my 2.5 dt (chipped) pours out smoke like hell. under constant running it pours out quite a lot, even for a chipped diesel. under hard acceleration its just plain embarrassing, sometimes at night i can hardly see the headlights from the one behind. could someone please guide me where to look? or where to start?

I changed 2 Turbo hoses recently and it doesnt use up oil. so im just left with airflow or a fuel problem or timing, iwas told it could be a leaking injector and unburnt fuel comes out the back.


I need to pass MOT and i dont think it will pass due to emissions.

hiya before jumping in with two feet and fearing the worst , do the basic checks air flow to start with , your air filter is it clean ? then go on to induction hose`s make sure there are no obstructions , or they are not kinked any where , you say you have replaced 2 of the hose`s are they genuine , make sure they dont collapse under load thus restricting air flow .
when did it start black smoking ? was it all of a sudden or was it a gradual process ?
as a last resort take it to a local indepedant workshop and get it plugged in to see what faults may exist .

It's a diesel.

It has a Turbo.

The ONLY source of steady black smoke is EXCESS FUEL.

Excess fuel means more diesel being injected than there is air to burn it.

If the straight-line performance is normal / good / amazing then there must be enough air going in, so the air-filter and turbo are doing OK, which only leaves the maximum fuel delivery setting being WAY too high.

This will have been "adjusted" by the chipping process.

Try a block of wood under the throttle pedal .....

Otherwise best think about UN-chipping before MoT time.

cheers for the replies, ive cleaned out the intercooler and all injection hoses and some temp sensors, there is oil coming from the camshaft breather valve andthat makes the whole thing dirty from then onwards. took a peek into the inlet manifold and it didnt look too healthy so ill clean that one out when i have time.

Ive noticed some improvement in power (good), but that cloud of black smoke still follows my range rover. any more ideas will still be appreciated.

What injection pump is fitted to the engine.

make and model please ...

and I will try to identify the maximum fuel screw for you so you can turn it down.

From what you say the max delivery setting is a tad too high.
