I read recently that a TD5 is designed to run on neat kerosene. But an old 19j 2.5TD will run too hot and become less than healthy.

If say, for example, and referring to a friend, who isn't me - that you blended new cheap veg oil from the cash and carry with some kerosene 50/50 from the heating oil tank, would that reduce the calorific value of the keosesne to a point that the 19J engine will be fine, need no alterations and start from cold?

Back to the TD5, again not mine, but a friends - with neat heating oil kerosese, or a mix of DERV and paraffin in the tank, would the VOSA people know that it was not diesel? Heating oil isn't dyed and smells pretty like diesel. My friend was just wondering. He has no internet. And for the avoidance of doubt, is not me.

At what point does it read as plain diesel?

As for the tax man, if you use a mix of diesel and kerosene, how does he know the exact amount you've used on your decleration? Say my friend (who is very bad) said he'd used 20 litres of kerosene and 40 of derv, when in fact he'd used 60 litres of kerosene and 10 of derv - how on Gods green earth would the nice government know?

A friend of a friend.

they use specific gravity check and chemicals to check for Kerosene in fuel tanks, besides the smell out of the exhaust gives it away!!!! 19j runs fine on 25-1 mix of Kero and Hydraulic oil (freind of mine runs on it all the time). Duty cannot be paid on Kerosene for road transport use as it is illegal to use it, so they would confiscate the vehicle, I know of 5 that have been taken that way.

They will confiscate the vehicle and it will be up to you to prove you didn't do it, so basically you're ****ed:D

For the avoidance of doubt, I am a friend, but not this friend. Although I do know a landy owner with a spare tank of heating oil. ;)

good stuff Tom..

Back to fuelling - why is it illegal to use kerosene? Surely if you make a veg / kerosene bio-diesel type thing and pay tax on it, the chancellor will be happy?

I thought the BIG IDEA at the moment (if you actually believe the science) is cutting down emmissions and CO2 - Surely if everyone put in a bit of veg oil and kerosene in their tank, britain would get nearer its targets, we'd magically save the world (well counteract a zillionth of Chinas CO2 output) and we wouldn't need Torness B quite so soon?

well I'm going to bite the bullet, fit an extra 90 tank at the rear of Edith and get a conversion kit, start on diesel, run heated SVO and finish on diesel. Or, my friend is, er, I should say. £400. You'd think there'd be grants if lower emmissions were REALLY the objective in our Greenwashed ****ry.

'eres an intrestin' take on the old gobal warming lark:

1991 a huge volcano in the Philipines erupts chuckin' millions of tonnes of dust, gasses and other stuff into the atmosphere - result was a global COOLING of about 1 degree C.

Amazingly - global warming has contributed to a global rise in temperatures of about 0.6 degrees - or to put it another way, not quite enough to bring us back to 'normal' from the 1991 erruption.

So explain it to me again, why are we paying more and more tax each year to help 'combat' global warming again?

for the past year i have not used fuel off the pump. first it was veg fat then past few months been on keroseen in a 200tdi and cannot notice and temp difference or performance difference apart from when the fuel filters had been clogged up a tad. as for the vosa pull ins i have a mate who is a traffic cop and i knew whats where and when so touch luck ill stay converscation free for a bit. wouldnt wanna run a newer lump on this ****e though as mine is a 92 with 182k on clock so if it goes it goes.

ah think if yer running veggie fat in yer injun the filters would be a bit more than clogged up a tad

so apart from having yer mickey mouse irish numberplate as yer log in name and then advertising on a global forum that yer run yer landy on kero what else yer gonna do before the weekend is over ;)

you still on about my number plate YD...................after saying about the pull ins i near got had today funnily enough haha.

guh, its not veg fat!

Its veg oil, if your going to use fat it needs to go through a heap of treatment first!

I love it on the news when they say that too, "chip fat" you can just see all the ****s out there pouring hot fat into their tanks!

yes veg oil, not veg fat...

As I said above, if it were fat you were using it would need treated, oil will go straight in, give it a good hard run with some DERV every now and again, helps burn of the cylinder glazing it causes.

thats a new one on me and WTF is animal oil?????? as an animal myself the only fluid i have to offer is the old man fat and i doubt i can run it on that haha
