Hay all
The heating in my freelander is a. Little crap, the engine temp never seems to get high enough.

Is this a common temp reading as this is my normal position no matter what the temp outside is even in hot weather

Is the thermostat easy to get at i guess it could be stuck open

Are we playing guess the engine here or would you care to enlighten us? It makes rather a lot of difference;)

Is the engine actually getting warm or not?

If the engine is at operating temp. Then it could be simply a sender issue.

Sorry yeah it's td4, my engine never seems to get that hot even on a long run the only time i have ever seen the temp gauge got to half way was stopping at a traffic lights after running up yhe motorway for 180 miles.
Fans have never kicked in either

The TD4 has issues with thermostat. They tend to fail open.

Do a search on here. Or even Google. Plenty of posts about the problems. All threads seem to start at about this time of year!!!

Not a simple job (6 hours for the auto for a £45 part- manual was about 1/2 hour less), though some people do a gates bodge job from a Renault 5.

Have s Google.

My temp gauge reliably hangs at the half way point now since I replaced the thermostat. The heater is still fairly poor, but much better than it was prior to replacement. Can't think of a time the fans have ever kicked either tho.

Whats the gates bodge

I did the renault 5 thermostat bodge over year ago and haven't had any problems and the heater works much better than before.

Sweet thanks, its 40 quid cheeper and 5.5-6 hours shorter to fit, why would anyone try to replace the standard one :confused:

I'd look for an airlock first, I've not got a td4 but there should be some bleed screws around the heater pipes, let it tick over withe the header cap off etc..

Dont think its an airlock as im getting heat thats corresponding to engine temperature from the matrix and my gauge has always read low, im 99.9% certain that its a stat issue

Because I would....... That's the design of it...... And fitting renault parts is just wrong on so many levels.

hear hear.

I had the thermostat replaced properly.

I don't like bodges.

But that is me. Also my vehicle is a little bit younger.

But for me its a lot of cost and down time on the car, i can understand people replacing like foe like if it can be affordable for them and can have the car off the road for the time period

But for me it will be a french fix 😀
