Miles from a computer/Rave/Manual etc should the Heater Temp Sensor be on the top pipe into the heater matrix or the bottom one? Trying to help a chap who took it off but can't remember which pipe it went on. I just can't remember as I haven't replaced one in ages.

I wondered this? Turn her on and felt which one was the warmest and stuck it on that one. Heater inlet, bottom one.
 
Actually on the diesel the top pipe on the matrix is the return and the bottom one the feed. On the V8 the top is the feed and the bottom the return. The temp sensor should be on the feed pipe.

Need to get to the bottom of it as it may be why the air/con not working? I have got home the WorkShop manual as far as I have read doesn't say which is a bit odd, unless I am looking on the wrong page?

Look at the circuit diagrams under cooling. Feed is. Top pipe on V8 bottom pipe on diesel.

Wow, this I will have to check, I was sure my bottom pipe was the feed, v8, so common sense would say stick it on the feed.

Does the diesel feed enter on the left from the engine bay? V8 enters the dash on the right. This should determine the position. It's got to be on the feed.

On the V8 the top is the feed. If your bottom one got warm first you have the hoses in the wrong place in the engine bay. Pipe from engine goes to top pipe, bottom returns to thermostat housing. Temp sensor goes on top pipe.

That was that peaceful weekend;)

You may be wrong there, in my version of RAVE its the lower one there's the feed and its mounted exactly like shown in RAVE on my car, sensor on Lower Feed.
LZ member cljcars confirm this as well... And other members could also check which one gets hot first...

Think the cooling system drawings are principal as they're opposite the heating repair drawings and how it is on my car regarding heater matrix
 
Other photos and support that the Core Temperature Sensor clips onto the lower pipe.

Yep but only if it's a diesel top pipe for V8. RAVE clearly states temp sensor should be on FEED pipe. The FEED pipe on the Diesel is the lower one. The FEED pipe on the V8 is the upper one. See cooling system flow diagrams and pipe runs under cooling in RAVE.

Got to argue that, but not shout, look at all the documentation and physical facts in photos.
If you base your knowledge on a component layout drawing I can see why you say what you say but
Look at the actual repair procedures drawings and it’s a different fish,
Standing in front of vehicle facing fire wall the right pipe is feed and connects at the bottom of heater matrix on petrol cars and highly likely the same on diesels as you say. (I do not have one at hand but another member could check)
Chapter 80 & 82 in workshop manual do not differ for diesel & petrol regarding the heating matrix and sensor location on bottom feed pipe. (On the cooling layout you refer to they do but its only a layout)
Checked my own car today so i'm sure, yes panel off, lower pipe with sensor gets hot first.

In the pictures in this link the pipes are clearly visible as it’s a LHD Petrol car & they run exactly like that on mine which is RHD,
couldn't swap or twist them to fit as neat as they do so its original.
Scroll down a bit and see pipes through bulk head.

Right have had a closer look at RAVE it does appear that the flow diagrams shown in cooling section do not match what is shown in the heating section. So you appear to be correct. Look at the diagrams in the cooling section to see where i was coming from.

Well thats that then, its the bottom one. Thanks for you both for a very interesting Thread. Did a check with a laser thermometer and the bottom one gets hotter first. When I first started out I trained as a draftsman and then as a technical illustrator before being an airbrush artist. Perhaps the illustrator of the diagram didnt have the car to look at?? and if he/she did the way the pipes cross over would have been more difficult than just two pipes together. Just shows how useful this forum is. "Magic" as Bill Maynard would say!.

Yes, saw the component layout drawings long ago, which LR based a flow diagram on, confusing when the actual build/repair drawings are different.
Been trailing many papers, checking my own vehicle and some of the many on-line photo threads, petrol or diesel no difference on the heater matrix.

Spent many hours in my life with drawings and know not to take them for bullet proof - unless i made them:D

Yep but i spent a very long time working on aircraft were the drawings are bullet proof. Well 99.9999999999999% of the time. Anyway not one for not putting my hand up. If i could do it without me shoulders hurting that is. :D:D

If wish I could say that about the aircraft drawings I'll be staring at tomorrow morning, scratching my head and thinking WTF?? :D

They are normally very good with cross sectional views. Only thing you can't do with a paper drawing is scale from it. You need a PCM or a lofting for that.:)
