I need to remove my control interface as it is pretty much like my dog, it doesn't care what "I" want, it just does it's own thing

Basically, heating/cooling works fine, but trying to dial up or down the blower speed is a mission. Sometimes it might blow harder, but mostly not... Also, the passenger side heat/cold rocker seems to stick so you get the heat climbing to Hi and sticking, then the wee book & ! legend.

You can poke the buttons for middle vent, windscreen, feet, etc til you are blue in the face and some days it thinks about it, but mostly doesn't.

I know it needs stripped & cleaned, new bulbs fitted and so on, but it's winter, I'm half cripple and I can't be bothered messing when I can do a swap and strip & clean at my leisure.

I don't have heated seats, but if anyone has a spare unit with those buttons present, will it confuse the BECM??

Or if someone has one and wants to PX, I'm happy to do that. I just want to go in, turn the blower speed up or down and/or adjust the heat without having to sit and spin like a Vegas penny arcade :(

1999 RR 4.0 V8 called George...

Thanks all :D

Doo,
Surely it's going to take less time to clean the contacts & switch rubbers, that actually removing & refitting it ?

I have a spare, BUT the lcd display is bad. Plan was to use Marty's replacement ribbon technique, but not got around to it yet.

I can't be sure exactly what is the problem, but it's internal rather than external. I could possibly dismantle it and clean up bits & bobs, but I figured it would be quicker to remove & replace... My LCD display is perfect!

That is very comprehensive, thank you ;) I have a bulb out on the passenger hot/cold rocker and same switch also tends to stick when pressing for hot, so it goes up on it's own..
I think the bulb is blown on the motor speed dial too (can't remember  ) But the dial is really annoying as you spin it and naff all happens

Thanks Wammers, but I could buy a whole car for that complete with working heaters :D:p

And thank you too Grrrr, I just thought if I buy a working one I could fix my one at my leisure and have a spare. It's purely dirty contacts (they must be like TV remotes) and the LCD is working just fine.

There's one on ebay out of an "N" reg, but it has heated seats switches. I take it my BECM will be fine with it???

It was just to give you the part number you should be looking for if you have heated seats, that is the latest one. They are not cheap even on Ebay. None heated seats JFC102540

Ahh, ok got you ;)

I was asking about the heated seats because mine doesn't have them, but I can get a unit with them.... I take it it would still operate in my car and give me an option later to fit heated seats if the BECM agree's :D

Don't know but I have a lowline BECM and also heated seats so I think it should work.

If you have the harness that could be done. The BECM does all the switching, the switches on the HEVAC are just momentary to signal the BECM to turn them on. So maybe a goer may not. Not 100% sure.

That's excellent guys, thank you. I'm happy to carry out repairs, but I like to ask if it's something I haven't worked on before. Always better to get a heads up.

I will keep you appraised of the happenings. I wonder if I might just wheech (Scottish for remove quickly :D ) mine out and use some switch cleaner on it as well as replace the globes.... I'll see if it comes out smoothly or not...

I got the kit from martyuk. Worked a treat. Repaired my rotary dial also (the tiny ball bearing had escaped & was taking residence in the casing).

Ball bearing, eh? I assume that completes the circuit and would explain the lack of switching the motor speed o_O

Looks like I will mostly be contacting Marty :)

Thank you ;)

Sorry I'm late to the party.... Away working in the US for the moment, 3 weeks down and another 3 to go... I get home early January, so other than moral support, I am not much use until then...

However...
Yes, if you fitted a HEVAC with heated seat switches in it, it won't disrupt anything else... they won't work obviously, unless the BECM has the relay fitted (which the earlier low-line boards probably didn't, but the later ones do) and you actually have heated seats and wiring in the vehicle.
What is the part number of your current HEVAC unit? I have one which I have reconditioned that doesn't have a heated front screen button, or heated front seats - JFC102540 rings a bell. I sold it on eBay and the timewaster who bought it and returned it... so if that is any use then I have that available when I get home...

The button contacts do get dirty and all sorts of dust and crud in there... The fan knob goes bad if the contacts on the PCB get dirty and the wiper that actually contacts everything gets tarnished aswell.
Parts that I have for HEVAC units include the screen connectors to fix pixel problems, but I also have springs and ball-bearings for the fan knob, and driver chips for the blend motor outputs...

If you want me to send over the instructions for the repair of the HEVAC screen, it shows pictures with the button contacts, so you can see what it's like to pull apart?

Cheers,
Marty

Hi Marty, been having wee fee hassle & trying to catch up on things.

I'll need to get in and remove mine. Give me a shout when you're home and if you want to do a PX or a sale or whatever, we can sort it out. As long as you trust me enough to send it up so I can fit it and return my old one as I don't want to be driving without it.... It's not as if I can do a runner, lol :p

I got it wrong, my blown bulb is on the speed control knob which also feeds the drivers hot/cold rocker. However, the passenger hot/cold rocker feels like it has a spring gone, either that or it's so sticky it's not returning. The other buttons are also sticking so trying to get it to switch from say screen to feet or whatever is really irritating. Other than that, the LED's work fine and when it does let me choose it blows hot or cold just fine.

I only use 3 buttons on mine: the up/down temperature one, auto and program!

That's problem, I can't get them to do "anything" and my son loves poking buttons so any settings I may have eventually got can be wiped in a second by him o_O

No problem - I'll give you a shout when I'm back and we can work something out...

If you can grab the part number off the one you have if you get around to it, or even a picture of the front of the unit - then I can make sure that the one I have will work for you. I'm back in just over a fortnight, so give me a poke with a message or something in the New Year if you haven't heard from me... I've got loads of bits piling up that people either want, or want me to look at on their vehicles... that and having a partly-built V8 in the garage to finish off and install in my own RR and is my priority when I get home - but if the HEVAC I have is going to be a swap-in replacement, then that's easy enough for us to work something out and I can pop it in the post. I usually do all my parts on exchange for the faulty one back - so it would be great to get the faulty one... it can go in the box of others that I haven't had time to pull apart and fix yet!

Marty
