OK, reflecting on what happened... the heating was in PROG mode, defrost and max fan etc. The smoke came out of the windscreen and side window defrost ducts; is it possible the fan motor burnt out?

Prog puts every thing on max so yes could be motor has burnt out.

As an after thought (sorry) not sure but think if you go under the bonnet you can remove the pollen filter housing 3 nuts back of engine on bulk head and it slides out, not 100% sure but think you just might be able to feel the fan through one of the openings there it might give you an idea if motor is ok.
