The next job on my list of things to do is to retrofit a heated windscreen to a 2001 TD5.
It is my intention to use a timer to control the length of time it stays on when activated, also use a pressure switch on the oil line to ensure it can only be activated when the engine is running as per Land Rover fitment.
I have been quoted from a local windscreen fitting company to supply and fit including new rubber £200:00 +vat at this point screen make unknown.
I have three questions:-
1/. Are there any windscreens makes to keep clear of? (poor quality or performance)
2/. Should I pre-purchase new mainstealer rubber and ask them to use this when fitting?
3/. In what position will the connection's be on the windscreen (top corner, top centre bottom etc.)
 
Anyone fitted or had one fitted???

Who gave you the supply/fit quote? That doesn't sound a bad price (assume its only fit the screen?)
 
Nordglass (Poland) and XYG (China) are the cheaper brands and can be a bit hit and miss in quality (especially how they fit).

Pilkington are the OEM for this screen, and there is a Pilkington aftermarket version available.

Be careful with the rubber - some of them are pony. Unless there's damage, the existing one is perfectly OK to re-use. A non-curing sealing compound will ensure the water keeps out.

The quote was for supply and fit a heated windscreen including the rubber at £200:00 + vat.
National windscreens in Wolverhampton.
Said give us 24 hours notice book it in, screen fitting will take about 1 hour.

Would you happen to know where the connections would be on to the screen? Just so that I can prepare the wiring or will the connectors be easily reached and I can install all the required wiring after the screen is fitted?
 
Re the rubber, mate of mine bought a rubber for a scout minibus , got a pro in to remove and refit it but they broke it putting it back in.

First thing he said was it's that rubber mate so it cost him a new screen and another rubber

Let them supply everything then if they break it it's their problem

I have one on my 110 and it's a genuine one from landrover. The connectors are at the bottom 2 corners, I had mine fitted by a local windscreen fitters with no problems as I believe it can be tricky and right enough they did have issues fitting it. Now though it is beginning to leak at the bottom corners which is a bummer. Mine works great though.

What do ou think is causing the leak? Are the seals perishing / split?

I guess I could have worded that better but I was trying to stress that it is easy to do providing the right people do it. And yes it mat be leaking at the corners but the windscreen still works fine was what I am trying to say. The rubber doesn't look perished as it was new when it went in and that was only a couple of years ago.

Now to fit but offered choice one with 2 contacts one with 3 contacts which should I use?

Hmm perhaps 3 contacts has 2 zones?

That's what I was thinking, how it is zoned who knows.
If anyone has any experience with both help would be appreciated.

Currently I do not have any wiring in place so from that aspect it could be either, I believe the thee contact screen is a fitment from 2002 but is it better by more efficient or more reliable or not as good at the earlier fitment prior to 2002?

No they said they only fit the appropriate screen as determined by the registration number of the vehicle and have no technical knowledge of the screen functions and design.
If using my registration number it would be a none heated screen.
