Just installed a new one. The old one was working, but even though it had no current breakages, it was only heating three lines which was weird. rear demister switch lit up when on, but 10 amp fuse blown. Just put another 10 amp in and it blew straight away? Can't find on tinternet if I should put a bigger fuse in, or have I got an autoelectrician job on my hands d'ya think?

Cheers for that. It was a 10 in it, and a 10 I put in and it blew. It's 92. 300tdi put in a few years ago. I'll go and buy some now. Funny that the switch lights up when on without a fuse in at all, don't you think?
 
More proof you have a fancy Chelsea tractor?! I have never used my heated screen so could not tell you if it works. The only use for the rear view mirror is the check on the dog, and possibly to see if the trailer is still attached. To see behind you you have wing mirrors :p:p

On a more serious (an possibly helpful) note I would still want to check the rest of the circuit even if the higher fuse means it is now working. Although, as has been pointed out, it may have needed the higher rated fuse as standard being an older model, I would still want to make sure the higher rating is not just hiding the original problem. It should not take long to check the condition of the wiring where it passes through things to make sure it has not chafed and is shorting out.
 
I wouldn't know how to do that. I'm back and put a 15 in and it's working now.

If it is working now the relay is probably not a problem, but it would be worth working out where it is for future reference. I know it has a 300tdi fitted but what model does the bulkhead and wiring loom come from (e.g. mine is an '89 but has a 300tdi bulkhead and loom fitted) this will give an indication where the relays will be.

Today, probably a coincidence (I hope) my right front indicator bulb blew. It's a 92 defender with a 300tdi installed a few years ago. All the wires look old (as in old). I'm just gettign to grips with general maintenance and machinery, so I think wiring stuff might be beyond my gift for now. What I'm saying is, I wouldn't know what to do with a relay if I did find it.

Buy yourself a multi meter, read the destructions, and you will be surprised at how much easier it will make for electrical issues. There is a good thread/post on here by ???? It is great info for a new learner:) do a search.
You will be surprised how the colder/ wetter weather throws up simple electrical faults this time of year.
Even if you trace it to a problem you are not up to fixing, at least you haven’t paid somebody to clean the earth at xxx place:).

Go on you’ve splashed out on spanner’s, go buy a little box of electrickery magic:)

You've inspired me! Cheers. I bust my multimeter doing the screen but gonna get another. Gonna read the electrical diagrams in my haynes manual later (I know, but it's a start :0)
 
What I'm saying is, I wouldn't know what to do with a relay if I did find it.

Unplug it, and plug a new/different one in to see if it makes a difference or solves the problem. Not a land rover but (link) shows how easy it is. The most difficult part is identifying which relay you need to pull out, but that is what the forum and the manual are for.

I know it is a very steep learning curve and it is a long time since I was at the bottom of it but @marjon is correct.

A multi meter is invaluable even if you just use it (as I do most of the time) to check if there is 12v coming down a wire. I have a draper expert one, but a cheaper version will do the same job.

I would fully expect this to be a coincidence caused by the cold wet weather. When you replace the bulb clean the bulb holder and add a smear of grease/vaseline/similar to keep the moisture away from the electrical connections.

I waggle em both if my indicators stop flashing and stay on all the time, or when the ignition and oil lights don't light up. Unfortunately, the vibrations from the engine loosen the fuses (well I can press em all in a bit after about a week. Does it look like I need new relays then?
 
If they wiggle loose and sometimes don’t work, pull them out clean the terminals. Then very carefully get a pointed pick and try to tighten the connectors in the fuse box. Don’t need much.
They aren’t expensive. They also are not all the same:eek:

Couple of spares in the toolbox doesn’t go amiss next time you at the scrapyard just put some in your pocket.:)

I changed the side lights last week. The indicator bulb going today was indeed a coincidence. Just gone to change it, and just like the side lights, stuffed card fell out, stuffed to hold the bulbs in when the groove goes on one side of the unit socket. . Now I'll say no more about the previous owner, but I'd like to know which tratterer on this site is spreading this silly 'trick of the trade', when new units are cheap as chips and easy to change?? Own up!

You cant use a weetabix box to patch the chassis, it does not have the structural rigidity needed regardless of how much filler and expanding foam you use, has to be at least a coke can or a baked bean tin if you want heavy duty.

Weetabx boxes are best used for making drive flange gaskets when you get to the end of the job and realise you have already stolen the one out of the wheel bearing kit which has been sat on the shelf for months :D
 
I got myself a jumbo box of assorted blade fuses off eBay years ago. They were all stupidly loose when fitted and felt cheap , I was always having to push them back in until I got fed up and wanged the lot. The quality ones I got afterwards fit real snug.
