I just bought a Discovery 3 2001 model which has the 2003 model headlights. This might sound a daft question but when I put the high beam on the main beam bulb goes out. Is that normal or not. I don't know anyone else that has these lights to ask them. Please help.

Cheers,

Mark

This is very common on a lot of cars, dipped beam will go out when high beam selected. not sure about this model but seems ok.
Just think about the current(heat) going through the connector if it left them both on.

They havnt been wired up correctly !.

The original headlamp unit has an dual filament " H4 " bulb in it, one for the main beam and one for the full beam. They would create to much heat if both on for too long, so one goes out when the other is on.

The facelift light unit has a seperate bulb for the main beam and a seperate bulb for the full beam, and these can both be on at the same time, but as yours is still wired for the pre-facelift lamp unit they cant.

Del.

As explained above, the pre-facelift H4 bulbs have one filament or the other illuminated at a time, but not both.

The facelift lamps have 2 x H7 bulbs, which both illuminate together when on 'High Beam'

You don't need a relay, all you need to do is move one terminal in the main lighting switch connector - same as a factory facelift vehicle.

Remove the cowl around the steering column (3 x screws)

Unplug the main lighting connector C0041 (there's just enough slack on the loom) -

Use a safety pin (or similar) at the front of the connector, to lift the terminal locking tab above the terminal in cavity 2, while gently pulling on the Blue/Red wire.

This is C0041 with the terminal locking tab (in cavity 4) being pointed to -

When the terminal is released, re-insert it into cavity 1

Plug the C0041 back into the main lighting switch, re-fit the steering column cowl - job done
