Hello.

1991 V8 RRC.

The headlights don't always come on. However, if you go to main beam and back to dipped, then they do (sometimes).

I'm guessing this is a stalk problem, dirty contacts?

Anything I should know before I go taking it apart?

Thanks.

More likely a relay. The stalk is unlikely to operate the headlights direct.

Ah right. Any idea which relay?

I'll go and adjust it with my Birmingham Screwdriver :)
Your owners hand book should tell you or maybe the lid of the relay/fuse box. If you do not have the owners handbook, I believe you can download RAVE for your model. I don't know detail info for the Classic, only the P38.:)

Thanks, but my broadband (mobile) wouldn't be able to cope with nearly 600Mb of download!

Does anyone here already have it, and could look up which relay and where it is for me please?

According to the workshop manual - '91 RRC headlamp relay should be under the lower dash panel (drivers side) sort of behind the steering column where there is a double row of relays, 10 in all. The headlamp relay should be the front row on the left hand end, the wires should have an "L" ident on them. The relay colour is "natural" The one behind it is a blue relay/timer for the rear wiper delay. The one next to the headlamp relay should be a black one for the heated front screen. Hopefully nobody has been in there and moved the relays around.

Good luck.

Thanks, that's brilliant. Thanks for taking the time.

But...........

How do I get the damn dash off? I have removed the screw top left (above the rheostat), the two at the bottom by the pedals and the one top right, around the corner of the dash.

But it is still attached somewhere around the air vent to the right of the wheel. Any ideas please?

Thanks!

Think you have to prise the vent out, hidden screw under it. Been a while since had my classic.

Update on this.

Weirdly the fault decreased to almost not there at all (maybe the use of lights more as the days get shorter....?)

Anyhoo, I took the dash apart and looked at the relay (thanks for all the help up there^^^). The relay was possibly a bit loose. Pushed it in and now all *seems* well. We shall see, no doubt it will pack up mid winter when it is -5C and raining instead of +20C and sunny as it is today :D

Thanks again.
