Last nigh whilst driving down a country lane and flicking from main and dip beam with the headlights the lights have gone dim when in the dipped postion and when i push the stalk forword there is nothing at all but when i pull back on the stalk both main and dipped beam is on. any ideas before i strip the steering colum down lol

Before you strip the steering column have a look at the connectors on the back of the headlights. When I had similar symptoms I found them melted and corroded.

then when you have messed about with the bulb connectors you can strip the column and sort the wires out in the light stalk assy, they break at the solder and it all goes pete tong.
takes about 10 mins and a piece o **** to do m8:D

sorted it i took of the stalk and stripped it down all the connections inside were dirty and the conection that powere the main beam was melted so im thinking that someone has had a load of lights going working off the headlights

I don't know if my '97 DI has the same light switch, but they come out & repair/clean really easy.

Mine also had darkening of the main connections, but inside the switch was filthy.

I cleaned the contacts w/rubbing acl & greased the rest - works great now.

luck,greg
