Hi All,

My tdi 200 headlamps are on permanently!
Driving along one day (last week) towing my caravan when i noticed them.
I've checked the stalk switch, the wiring and any connectors and fuses and can't see any problem!
I have to take the main light circuit fuses out to turn them off as removing the keys makes no difference!
I'm guessing that as its only the dipped beam and the main and sides work ok via the 'switch' that it could be a relay! but thats where my knowledge dries up.... The Haynes manual (useless!) says that I have to test by using a new relay but as there are a few under there its gonna cost a fortune to go through them one by one!
Has anyone come accross anything like this before?
 
Agree about Haynes for the headlights..!

Just looked in the wiring diagrams and it doesn't show the headlight relay on the diagram covering the main lighting circuits (page 13.28)!! Can't make a whole lot of sense out of the diagram to be honest.

Might be best to get a proper Land Rover manual (on CD is cheapest...I'm getting one myself) and check out their wiring diagrams.

Once you know what colour the wires are going to the headlight relay, it won't take too much fishing to find it (I'd reckon it's behind the steering column somewhere).

Hi is you're LR an english spec one ? Some overseas spec vehicles are wired to have their lights on constantly ie Sweden (Volvo) I have seen some NAS and saudi spec LR's wired this way. It is not too hard to re wire them as long as you know the switch:

Locate the wire colours from the switch and follow it down, you might have to gently cut the wrapping off of the loom to do this, although it may be sealed in blocks like the Range Rover. Follow the wires to the relay plug.
Good way of following it from the lights is to again undo the wrapping from the lights and follow it into the cars bulkhead.

If it's an older vehicle and not NAS/Swedish/Saudi/Military Spec then you've had a Sunday mechanic (like my Range Rover) you just have to re do the wiring again it's not a hard job will take you half a sunday (less you're willing to let a sparky charge you loads for do it)

I'm gonna take your advice though and follow the wires through until i find the fault.

has your car got dim dip lights when engine running and side lights on .
if so try disconnecting dim dip relay unit , unsure were it is on discovery , but on rangerover it is above drivers feet .

Having a similar problem, headlights not coming on, at all. What fixed your problem? Agree with the earlier Haynes comments. Its like they got bored at the end.

I have had intermitent problems with one of mine, I simply go to the back of the lamp and unplug and ree plud the lamp conector, seems to do the trick, I suspect this is because of where it is, it is just dirty. This may not help your problem though.

I had to buy a new relay, if you can call it that, more like an electronic device black with orange socket. L/R dealer wanted £80 for one. got one from the scrap yard for £20. The device was hidden behind the fuseboard under the dashboard. No probs since.
