If I got a copper gasket could I turn that round and I only seem to get 2 and 1/4 gaskets not 2.5

Copper gasket only goes one way up too, IIRC, and doesn't support the swirl chamber caps as well as composite.

Are you telling your parts man the full story? If you ask for a gasket for your motor, you will get it for a 2 1/4. Composite gaskets for 2.5 are available.

A few comments that might help (might not)

The hot spots are easy to remove and would probably be removed by a decent machine shop before machining. So getting the head skimmed would be the price of the machining plus 4 new hot spot plugs (as the old get destroyed when you hammer them out). Them there hot spots ain't cheap!

A quick and dirty DIY check for head flatness can sometimes be made by placing the head on a sheet of modern glass and jabbing feeler gauges between glass and head. This is nowhere near as good as a proper surface plate / surface table but might help to give an indication before you go off down to your friendly machine shop. Old fashioned glass is too wobbly for this but modern stuff is surprisingly flat.

The chances of a cast iron head warping with out a seriously noticeable over heating problem is not very likely.

Hylomar do a nice spray on gasket dressing that can help when fitting head gaskets.

Check the water ways and oil paths before you fit a gasket! Check everything lines up before you fit the head!

I have looked at pics of my old 15J gasket and believe you need to turn it over.On the block you can see where the gasket was.

I think we have got one the parts man went and blowed the dust off an old ldv parts book and think we have found one and have found the air filter as well if all fits I will have part nos to find things this shops has been helpful the shop wasn't intreated

Bought it after crank pressure blew the original out when head gasket went , also had to by a tube shortly after can look up part numbers sure I used landrover items. [will probably have receipts]
As it happens I have just removed both from my 200DI conversion as now have disco manifold and disco dip stick refitted. So it available for sale.
Your not per chance going to Seriously Series Leafers at the pit event this weekend are you its at National Mining Museum nr Wakefield .

No I'm working on the land rover I wanted to go to Peterborough but don't know if I will make it I'm after part nos for any part on the 14 j that's not land rover I've got to get a sump gasket but think that is standard landrover I hope I've nearly pulled all me hair out lol hope fully get my steel to patch the chassie next week so I can get started on that then it's just my loom to come and I can start to put it back together

Stc1562 is the top end gasket set. Head gasket is err3618.

Far as I know the differences in 14j and 15j were just in the timing chest so the head gaskets will be the same.

Well bank holiday time I've put the sump back on and new oil filter well done to the spares whole they have been great getting me matching gaskets and filters for this 14 j been cleaning the chassie ready for the steel and the engine which is thick with oil and dirt I've had to scrape it off it was that thick found some more holes surprise surprise lol but as long as I can get her up and running for over winter that will do me and get a new chassie next year head is going back on tomorrow so fingers crossed all goes well what engine oil is best for the old girl

Sounds like an interesting project, more pics of the vehicle, and what you are doing, would be welcome! :)

As above, good quality mineral multigrade diesel oil, any branded 15/40 would be ideal.

Well head on today tappets set all back together just got to wait on the new loom to fire her up so put the new battery box together got the steering wheel off after weeks of soaking lol drained the diesel tank so I can set the new sender unit up seem like I've been on it years but while I'm waiting I'm doing a few other jobs to keep on top of it and hopefully tidy it up to get her through the mot fingers crossed in the next couple of months be nice for October ready for Malvern I've put a few pics on

I've never seen an engine covered in so much oil and dirt she's never had a service all the filters were full of crap I've had to scrape the oil off its that thick I'll change all the oils in the box's and axles and swivel hubs so I know it's done I've changed all the hoses bar 2 which I'll do as well but I'm getting there

Often the case with old landies, I am afraid, but you will get there in the end, and they are fairly good once sorted and properly maintained,

Well done a bit of welding today my welding isn't the best and the welder is a cheap one but gets me by and ive been using gasless wire as I'm fed up of trying to gas round here
