Hi all - I'm a newbie and this is my first post - surprisingly enough it's about a head gasket problem.

I have a 1998 1.8 XEI Freelander. Went to pick hubby up from work on Thursday and noticed the revs were running quite high when I was idling - temp gauge was reading below half. Was gonna say something but hubby had bad day at work so I figured I'd wait till later only on the way home - surprise surprise - car cut out and was smoking a little and chugging. Foot to the floor it was only managing 50mph.

Hubby had a look and says its the HG - we called the mechanic who says that apparently its a common fault that the water pump goes and then wrecks the HG so we need to replace both. Is this correct? HG has already been done in 2005 before we got the car.

Any advice would be appreciated
