Hi, I've searched the site & can't find any discussions on HGS... probably a reason for that!
My garage (independent LR specialist) says he thinks HG has gone. It's been a long road to this point with many parts being replaced to resolve issue. Radiator connector hose split a couple of days ago I think it was original. I'm on 103k miles. Hose replaced yesterday and today engine overheating. So.......in an attempt to take time to save up for the inevitable I was wondering about HG sealant as a temp fix. Has anyone had experience with using it?

What engine is it?

If TD5 you cannot leave the problem in situ and keep using the car, as you will most likely wreck the motor.

If TDCI I have no idea.
 
Then you are going to have to either sell it or fix it or park it up.
If it is a early td5 with 10p engine, gasket failure is usually first sign that the head has shifted sideways on the plastic head dowels, leave it to long and the valves can damage the sides of the bore, scrapping the engine.

Gasket repaired and all good. Still had plastic dowels on head which had snapped & head slipped.
I'm sporadically loosing power though. This was happening before HG was repaired. Not every journey but happening more often. It's as if it gets restricted. Then clears it's self it I push on through with the revs. Limp mode, turbo issue?
It's a bugger when pulling the trailer!!

What actually happens is the head shuffles sideways which then shears the plastic dowels.
There was some talk at the time of not retrofitting steel dowels like the later 15p engines used, what the reason was I cannot remember!
They used plastic dowels to stop the head face being damaged on the production line, this was also a petrol K series thing.

As for the lack of power, I would start with the fuel system, my td5 used to block the mesh filters on the in tank lift pump, accessed though the boot floor.
Do not discount the fuel filter regardless of age.

The contact strips in the throttle pedal also wear out.

Fuel filters can be a problem, the filter housing is mounted in a very silly place, where it collects all the dirt and water going.
And the standard plastic filter housing can actually melt, because a Td5 makes the fuel very hot.

Injector loom is always worth a check as well, they should really be regarded as a consumable service item on Td5s.

Thanks Lynall well I use the TD5 for work so it needed to be fixed!
I had the fuel pump replaced a couple of years ago & I don't think I've got the handy hole in the boot floor. I'm servicing her soon so I'll change fuel filter then.

Thanks Turboman. I replaced the injector loom recently as I had oil creep down to the ECU. Yes the fuel filter is always caked when I replace it....which I due to do soon.
 
....also I've got hunting as my mechanic calls it. Random increase & decrease in revs idling & in gear. I'll check the MAF & APP......but I can't help thinking it's the ECU??

So I've replaced the fuel filter, cleaned the MAF & APP. See how she goes tomorrow. With regards to the lift pump mesh is it as straight forward as making access hole in boot floor then pump is accessible to check?

When I had to remove the fuel pump from my td5, I googled it and got the exact measurements of where to cut the hole. Then after I got a bit of aluminium plate and riveted it over the hole

So after new filter & sensors cleaned up a bit touch wood no more loss of power! The filter housing was showing signs of corrosion. Amazing how hot the filter gets after just a few minutes on tick over. I'm still getting the hunting though so going to blank the EGR. I actually took the egr off yesterday and cleaned it up the pipe off the bottom was full of sludge. Put back on but still hunting.

The mesh on the pump could still be full of gunge. Mine was when I took it out
