Hello,

I've been asked to change the head gasket on my friends 19J engine. Is this a pig to do?

I've done engine rebuilds before, but only on pushrod engines, so i've only touched a timing belt once.

The things I desperately need to know are how to lock the timing and where, on the head and the block. The head bolt torwue settings and the valve clearances.

I'd be extremely greatful for your help. :)

And are there any known faults of this engine?

She turns over, diesel to injectors, but won't fire.

Thanks. :)

Pretty easy, combustion chambers may have fallen out and need renewal. It is a pushrod engine, you don't need to lock the timing, use a quality head gasket an new bolts. Check carefully for cracked/warped head!!

Known faults of this engine are almost everything.

Even I managed to do mine so it can't be that hard :) I found it easier to do most of the job sitting on the radiator with a foot on each chassis rail. Only real thing to be careful of is when taking the rocker gear off, make sure it doesn't disassemble itself. You'll need some long hex bits to do the manifold bolts which can be a bitch to get lined up, but otherwise it's straightforward.

I took the head off to find not only a blown head gasket, but rusted and scored bores. And believe it or not, 4 cracked pistons!

not unusual for a 19j, rebore and new pistons ,but get pistons first so bores are machined to piston size ,not nominal size

depends what you want to pay AE is what i like to go for but have used britpart and others without ill effect when customers have supplied the parts ,rtc599320 or rtc599340 are what youd probably need
