i have just paid £1300.00 to have the head gasket fixed on my mrs freelander. just taken it in for a health check at land rover and they tell me 'the rocker cover gasket looks used and resealed'. Have i been ripped off???? Has the mechanic used some second hand shoddy bits???

sorry to say - but usual consensus is - if yu had HGF - then get shot quick - it cud just happen again - it is not unusual to have multiple HGF's:eek:

they must have used the gold HG and diamond studded oil rail.

1300 quid fer a HG..?????

Make sure its the rocker cover and not the cam carrier they are referring to. Its only a metal shim with a thin covering, about £10 a gasket.

Did they charge you for a new rocker cover gasket?

I have seen this on some k-series, TBH it will probably seal it better than a new gasket.

Thats nothing, some MG boys pay around £1800

Thats the price you pay in the South of England

more money than sense.... even allowing fer getting head skimmed , parts can't come to more than ooooo , lets be generous....£200

thats £1600 fer labour that works out to about £200/hour ish

Yep, daylight robbery.

Time to change profession.

if a simple head gasket failure, and the head ok,no chatter marks of the fire rings, and the liners wer'nt spinning,h/gasket £28.00 r/gasket £7.00 sealant for cam box,if removed,£6.00 labour @£45.00 per hr x 4.75 hrs. work it out mate, what u paid for would be a full strip down to reseal the linners and a rebuild with all the modifications landrover issued over the years.i would hope it fails again and take the bas***d to court who ripped you off.

he aint sed if its a 1.8 or a KV6 - if its a KV6 thats not bad - i had a bill of £1800 fur my KV6 HGF, including head skimming.

When my car was having the engine mounting bracket replaced, I asked them to investigate a water leak. They traced it to the head gasket and said the head gasket will need replacing very soon as the water is leaking into the oil. I knew Freelanders had a problem with head gaskets, but I expected a couple of years out of it! It was replaced in July last year, so that's 7 months! Is this just bad luck or can I expect it to go again in another 7 months?

It's a shame the Freelander has such a crap engine, because the body is perfect for my needs. I only planned to keep it for a couple of years but didn't expect to have to replace the head gasket in that time.:(

The MLS gasket is a step in the right direction, it can fail, although no confirmation of liner heights from 1st repair on those repeat failures. 40k and counting is the highest mileage on the MLS, released Mar 06

Hi,
To say youve been ripped off is an understatement!
Ihad same job done Sept 07, plus while it was apart had the cambelt changed and tensioner. anti freeze and an oil change. Total cost £420, which included a courtesy vehicle to use whilst it was being done. Your repair man is a crook!
