building up steam to do the head gasket/head off on my 95 diesel manual.
Now the question id like to pose is, if you were me i.e doing the head gasket would you check the fuel injection pump timing as your almost halfway there so to speak after you've replaced the gasket but before trying to start it up?
it doesn't seem that much of a difficult job according to the rave manual,or is it just me hoping too much
thanks

Would make no sense not to. Check timing chains whilst you are at it. No problem if you have all the special tools. If you don't have them don't even think about taking head off. Why is the head coming off out of interest?

starts runs no problem ,soon as I take it on the road up goes the temperature into the red cant hold it even with heaters full on.
new thermostat,new waterpump,new viscous,new rad
still over heats so biting the bullet and checking the head for obvious cracks etc,if still no good, ill drop another engine into her then drive like hell for the 3 months warranty period, lol

btw ,how does one check the timing chains please?

Take the front cover off remove them and check them for toothache. (Wear in the links) Then even if they are good fit new ones. All these questions do not give me confidence that this job will go smoothly to be honest.

Me and JamesMartin were discussing this. just take your time and loads of photos as you do things. It'll be a learning curve if nothing else ")

Good luck mate.

ta,thanks for all the help, will report back
thank goodness I bought myself a four post car ramp!!!!!!!!!!
ok ok second hand but its in and works

Sorry to say that it sounds more like a cracked head than HGF. Head failure is more common than HGF. Cracks can be hard to see.
