Hi all

I have just replace the cylinder head gasket on my 2003 1.8freelander, I started it up and there is a nocking noise coming from the engine it seems worst from the top right by the oil filler cap. I had the head skimmed and the cams were both removed and cleaned, could it be any of the following?

Cams settling back in?

The timing out slightly?

Anything else?

Thanks Rob

I have just read that the sound could be caused by a faulty o-ring on the oil sucktion deceive in the sump slowing air into the oil, we have replaced the ladder rail so we did remove this, could it be this?

Might just be the tappets rattling, try adding an engine flush then a new oil and filter and see if it helps.

Just done the same job on my landy and i have to say that when i started mine after the strip down it sounded like a bag of spanners and a trolly jack had been left inside it. But it did settle down and now runs nice and quiet, its just a shame that after having the head skimmed new 20thou shim plate and all the bits and bobs that go with it it looks like i missed a crack in the head and ive got to do it again!!!

you should also read Anguslives guide on HGF , a lot to wade through but well worth it if you are going to do it right ...

Hiya,

I replaced my HG last week and found a few other issues whilst doing it, such as the tie bar bush. If you replaced the oil rail then you had to remove the bracket, are you sure that it was put back correctly? Had you put plenty of oil in the lifters before refitting them?
