Hello,
I write from Germany. I'm thinking about buying a 1,8i Freelander from 1998 with 40.000 Kilometres on the clock.
When I heard about the problems of the Freelanders with it's head gasket, I'm not sure about buying it.
Will every Freelander have this problem with the head gasket or is it recommended to fit replacement thermostat to
prevent a gasket blow up.
Are there any recommendations to prevent a head gasket blow up?

Thank you for your answers

hi was in a 4x4 workshop last weekand they had a freelander 1.8 petrol with a blown head gasket . not good vehicle only 13 months old

the impression i was getting from the mechanics is the biggest problem is the size of the header bolts they are to long for the job and they no that the person whos vehicle it is they are just waisting there money cos replacing the gasket and skimming the head is not going to solve the problem hope this helps

But are there reliable stats on the % of K-class engines that fail?

I read 2 in 5 somewhere, but that sounds remarkably high!
